Here are some photos of Garys car before I helped him sell it in 2010. The car was stunning. It was a one owner car and in pristine condition and only 28000 one owner miles. He kept it for almost 35 years. It had a very unusual dual shock system installed.

Here are some cool Scorpion pics. The first one kind of sums up my experience with them. The second following ones are of when I once had 4 of these follow me home one day. All 4 were not running. Got them up to speed and sold all of them but the Gold one. Cut that one up....

Nice!

As a former Scoprion owner I love these pics and seeing these cars on this forum. Unfortunately I don't have any digital pics of my X1/20.

In the spirit of excess is good, here's some pictures of my black car. I bought it bone stock back in 1986. Made my own molds for the Montecarlo parts and created the double bubble hard top which has been copied by several sources over the years. It has a fuel injected HP 2 liter and a custom geared transmission. Full coil-over suspension, urethane mounts and modern brakes.

Love the Montecarlo 'conversion'

Definitely improves the look of the car when you remove the long 'American' bumpers. The five spoke wheels look better with the Montecarlo look, too.

I wanted one of these a long time ago, when I saw one for sale locally while living in San Diego. My dad discouraged me saying the looked a lot faster than they were; later I learned the cars had handling issues, esp. in the wet. I LOVE the interior design of these cars...probably the best part.

An attractive, if flawed, car. I presume that most have done the necessary 'fixes' to the early cars to address the handling issue?

Yes! and no

I had read somewhere about handling issues, particularly in the wet, and that Lancia had so many problems that the pulled the car from production for a few years. The "solution" was to remove the brake booster, which "eliminated" the problem of the ends swapping by decreasing brake performance. Wherever I read this claimed that was a poor solution to the problem, and that while it helped address the issue of ends swapping it resulted in really poor braking.

When I posted earlier, I just had a vague memory of the problem. The comment about removing the brake booster brought back more detail into my head.

Of course, coming from an article (likely written by a motor journalist), and not from an owner, the issue may be portrayed worse than it is.

As I understand it, the brake booster only boosted the front circuit on the series 1 Scorpion / Montecarlo, I am sure this contributed to the problem of the fronts locking. Some info here.

Leather seats...

Assuming they were re-done, where did the leather come from on your car JJ, at the top? Always liked that shade of reddish/tanish/brown. The new Miata's have a version of leather this reminds me of.

I have a local guy that does the leather for me. He charges about 500 but that one was much more expensive because of the quality and the matched door rests. I cant remember the color but its the same as in the Continental Bentley...

My Lamborghini pearl orange Volumex fuel injected Montecarlo conversion/ Complete with full suede interior (I do EVERYTHING myself):

I won't reply to each owner, but they are all excellent examples of the car. I remember JJ's cars on Ebay, excellently presented and in OE type condition. The modified cars are also incredible, I confess a particular liking for the white over gray two tone (something I really hate normally but it does relate to the 412/512 BB of the same era by Pinninfarina)

It is nice to see these cars and I look forward to seeing more posts here that cover more of the cars. Now I really want one of these, time to track down a guy near me who has two or three basket cases to see if its possible to resurrect any one of them.

Thanks for posting them.

Karl

Wow...

Nice work there. I have thought about a suede interior, but I expect it's out of my budget. Looks great.

A couple of questions...

First, what size tire were you using on this one?

Second, what parts did you use for the quad round headlights? Beta? I like that look a lot, always have. I can fab the surround easily enough, but the actual buckets etc. I could use some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

The tire were 185/60/14 in the front and 205/60/14 in back on 6.5" rims.

I used beta headlights and Series 2 Zagato grill. I made the one-piece nose panel too.
About $1000 cheaper than going with the original Montecarlo headlights...
I personally hate the Scorpion lights. You would think that since the car was designed for the American market, Fiat would have incorporated the bumpers and headlights into the original design. Instead we got an afterthought abomination.
