82 Spider refurb

NM850

True Classic
My dad got this Spider in 84 for his 50th birthday. He’s no longer driving so he wanted it to go to my son. It was up to me to refurbish it. It hadn’t really been used in the last 3 years and even though low miles its 35 years old so....my sons not so mechanically inclined so I wanted to be as close to perfect as possible.

Start with all the hose.
Cooling and fuel from the tank to the injectors.
Complete brake overhaul. Master, calipers, hoses, brake compensator. Might as well do the bearings while I’m there.
Oh of course timing belt, tensioner and waterpump

By far the hardest job was fixing the drivers side window. It needed a new cable.
At the cost of those regulators I was considering changing to manual but then I’ve fixed a few Alfa power windows, how hard could it be? I got some cable at Ace and had at it. I’m embarrassed to say it took 14 try’s . The routing wasn’t the problem but keeping tension on both ends while looping the cable over the pulleys and getting the right amount of cable on each side was. I even made one of those clips that’s supposed to hold the tension.
Well an exercise in frustration but it paid off, its butter smooth now.

That is one lucky kid!

Nice work all around. Great attention to details.

Happy to see it stay in the family.

Very nice work. Maybe if I just leave one of my cars in your driveway you will feel the need to fix it up too... maybe??? :p

Sure leave that 124, you might not get back. :) I need a Fiat sedan, kind of looking for a 1500.

The 124 drives great but the clutch was at the end of its travel and there was no more adjustment on the cable. We are having nice fall weather so this happened. Might as well reseal the trans while it’s out, it was quite oily before the wash.

So this plastic throw out bearing came in my clutch kit. Anybody have long term experience with one of these? Call me old fashioned but I’d rather reuse the original all steel one.

Honey who shrunk the clutch?
Just a little humor. That’s an 850 disc, I thought it would be fun to compare.
You can clearly see the 124 disc is worn.

Do you mind telling us where the plastic part came from?
I’d like to talk to the vendor first because their customer service is usually outstanding.
I'm not interested in any type of vendor bashing. They provide a very valuable service, and most of them are very good. I hope you don't think it's bad to want to know what you're buying before you buy it. Nobody should be interested in selling folks something they don't want.

I’m in total agreement with you.
Let’s put it this way, it came in a ‘Full Valeo clutch kit”
It’s not the fact that it’s plastic that bothered me, it’s that where it contacts the clutch fork the plastic seemed very flimsy.

3BEA4941-8593-44A4-97BD-5EA09058B307.jpeg The clutch is in but the pedal still made an awful noise. I thought it was the spring but no, it was the cable. So new one ordered.

FF2CFE63-0639-4C93-8835-9759B03D4BF0.jpeg Replacing the cable was a job in itself. That pedal spring is a bear. An old timer taught me this trick to expand a spring ( He used washers as pennies were probably still worth something then. I used 14 pennies as they are cheaper than washers)

The car is now done and I will be bringing it to my son in a few weeks. A 400 mike road trip.
Pics to follow.
