Spark Plugs

Used NGK for years, always found them consistent. For a standard x19 there’s no reason to use a ‘specialist’ type plug IMHO. On my two Alfa’s I switched from the 4 electrode Golden Lodge plugs, the ones recommended by Alfa Romeo because they constantly fouled up and had variable quality to good old NGKs...

That might have been a consequence of what I said earlier; NGK offers a very limited heat range selection for each application. Their entire line of plugs is significantly less than that of other plug makers. So the plugs recommended for any given application may be off by as much as 3 or 4 heat ranges (compared to what the others offer). Therefore the ones you had might have been too hot, and the electrodes burned off. To further complicate this problem, if you went to one size colder NGK plug it might have been way too cold and fouled. They just don't offer enough of a heat range selection to work in many cases. I'm not bashing NGK, just relating what I've found in my experiences; in my opinion sometimes it does matter what brand you choose.

I understand and agree. These were the proper heat range. Also used 1 range cooler (turbo car running custom tune and tolulene) and found same result. Bosch in proper heat range would last twice as long, but also would eventually burn to core away. (running LS2 coil packs at significantly higher output likely played a role as well.

I use Magneti Marelli from MWB. They are said to be original style. I always purchase an extra set when I order.
Thanks,
Mike

Sorry to piggy back on this thread - but I'm looking for suitable Mk1 Uno Turbo Spark plugs (correct heat range, etc.) The one listed in the service manual are really difficult to find (I think they're Bosch).

Any Uno Turbo people out there with any feedback? I just want a reliable plug that's easy to obtain. Thanks! :)

For a light/low pressure turbo like this there is really no reason not to use the stock WR7DC or equivilent. Using a colder plug will not help off boost drivability. Volvo's (240, 740, 850., etc) all used the same heat range for NA & Turbo setups. Unless the UT uses a significantly altered ignition system?

That and the heat of a turbo engine's combustion. I believe they typically recommend going a couple of heat ranges colder when converting to turbo. But I don't know the details on that.
Sorry this derails the original discussion, but was OEM turbo motor (Audi AAN 5cyl 20v turbo motor in S2 / S4 / S6)

Bigger turbo, modified ignition, replaced ECM with programmable system (VEMS)

What plug is spec'ed in the original owners manual?

Thanks for the reply, Kevin. I didn't have the service manual handy when I asked, but here it is. It's a three tip spark plug, and apparently not readily available at first glance. According to Denso's website, the Iridium Power IK22 would work, but on the cross reference page - it doesn't cross to the Bosch FR6DTC - instead it crosses to Bosch FR6 DDC (which I believe is a dual tip plug, the DTC is triple?). "If" the Bosch are still available, then I might as well stick with those as specified in the FSM. Just found it on their website, listed as discontinued in 2018 :( : https://www.bosch-automotive-catalog.com/en/product-detail/-/product/0242240528

Hmm!

Myron, if you cannot find the exact Bosch plug (3 prong) you are looking for, then you should be able to find an equivalent Bosch with less than 3 prongs (two or single electrode) by concentrating on the plug's size (heat range, reach length, etc). The "FR 6" part of the name indicates M14(1.25), 19mm reach, and Bosch's #6 heat class (one step colder than the NA plug).

And here is a list of crossover plugs from other makers:

Good to know! Thanks, Jeff! I didn't know that's what it meant. I'm sure I'll find a cross that will work. One cross reference says Denso IK20 and another IK22, just need to figure out which will work and go from there! Thanks again, makes sense.

If you go with Denso, the higher the number the colder the plug, in one whole number increments. So a IK22 is one step colder than a IK20.

Apologies if this was referenced earlier:

They used to have a side by side chart that showed the equivalent relative to the heat range but I did not find it after a quick look.
