How to test KYB strut out of the car?

Has anyone heard of these guys in Australia?
I have not heard of them either. The prices for coilovers are not listed, have you inquired? It would also be nice to be able to select the specific spring rates, etc, but maybe they do? I did not read the fully descriptions to see exactly what they offer. I will say I've found shipping to the US from Australia to be higher than from most places. So inquire about that as well.

There was another Australian suspension company (Pedders) that used to offer replacement inserts for the early X's strut housings (the "rebuildable" style). But it was reported on Xweb that they no longer make them.

Both PSR and D2 say they can supply coil over kits. I've asked for details. Are you looking for Street or Performance?
You can have D2 in Street, Sport or Race mode. You can even have your own specification for spring rate and different top plate designs (caster) as they are made to order for X1/9.

I took a little closer look at that Australian site. There is very little info offered on them. But in my opinion even their softest spring option (for the X) is a little too stiff for a normal street car, and I did not see where you can specify your own preference in rates. It does not appear the dampeners are adjustable. They have solid top mounts, which many coilovers do, but that makes for a rather harsh ride. The face page says "free shipping" but apparently that is only within Australia, there is a shipping calculator at the product page (I did not fill it out to see the cost to the USA). Although there is no price given for the set, many of their other offerings are on the high side. So overall I have the impression (and it's just an impression) they are a average level product at possibly a above average price? However it will be interesting to hear any actual data from them to find out more.

The PSRs look identical to my cheapy Boxster coilovers except for the XYZ decal. If it's the same then it's a very common coilover made in Taiwan? and sold to several parts houses around the globe. I bought them because one guy on the forum was using them for the track and he was satisfied. I paid $1,099 shipped. https://yellowspeedracingusa.com/

Both D2 Racing and PSR have replied with more details, provided below. Please note that both mention a "supplier". In the case of D2 Racing, the supplier (TW Racing Parts) is from Taiwan. PSR provides the same exact specs; I am therefore concluding that TW is also their supplier. Also, as mentioned by Dr.Jeff, spring rates for Street version are far too high. I'll let you review this and let's talk again. The Australian $ equals approx. $0.77 US.

PSR Performance Suspension
As you'll see there are 3 different kits available.
Super sport - which we usually recommend for street cars. This kit has a front spring rating of 5kg/280lb and a rear spring rating of 7.2kg/403lb
Top sport - which is more of a firmer option. This kit has a front spring rate of 6.3kg / 353lb and a rear spring rating of 8.7/487lb
Race spec - for more Track use than street use. This kit has a front spring rating of 7.2kg/403lb and a rear spring rating of 9.8kg/549lb
These kits come as pictured in the listings linked below.

D2
All prices are AUD and include GST.
There are 3 available D2 coilover models for the Fiat Bertone X1/9:
Street Version (http://www.d2-race.com/conpage.aspx?dsn=1911&csn=1267) - Pillowball Rubber Top Mounts front and rear, spring rates 5.0/7.2kgmm respectively - $1999
Sports Version (http://www.d2-race.com/conpage.aspx?dsn=1911&csn=1268) - Pillowball Top Mounts front and rear, spring rates 6.3/8.7kgmm respectively - $2249
Circuit Version (http://www.d2-race.com/conpage.aspx?dsn=1911&csn=1270) - Pillowball Top Mounts front and rear, spring rates 7.2/9.8kgmm respectively - $2699
As I understand, the Bertone X1/9 is a McPherson Strut design so the front top mounts will provide camber adjustment.
Included is the 4 x coilover units, 2 x height adjustment spanners, 2 x damper adjustment tools and any other necessary fittings + installation manual.
Depending on the intended use, one of three versions of coilovers should meet your requirements for this very unique car.

Just posted my research on PSR and D2. Indeed, Taiwan supplier. Have you tried yours on your X?

No Alain, I only have them for the Boxster and Yellowspeed doesn't list the X. Still trying to figure out what to do. Vick's two options won't be in stock until March or April, MWB are a little pricey for me right now so those would have to wait also.

Same here, trying to figure out my options. Vick's kit does not have adjustable shocks, an important feature if you want to get Street comfort and Track firmness. As for MWB, they are pricey and the shocks are single adjustable (rebound) while the double adjustable are very pricey.

Vick's has a Koni adjustable, not sure which Koni;

Out of curiosity I wrote to Yellowspeed to see if their manufacturer has an X coilover.

Alain, the response from PSR doesn't say much. Actually nothing more than their site says, so really no help in knowing what they offer. Are they adjustable dampening? What's the price, shipped?

I like that D2 offers a rubber cushioned top mount. Most coilovers for a limited demand vehicle like the X do not offer that. It would be a big benefit for a street car. I notice that their spring rates the same as PSR. However I believe they will supply them with other rates if requested? They are adjustable dampening which is a big plus. Not exactly a "discount price" set though. But other members here have installed them on their X and report favorably, another plus.

There are several manufacturers in China that make the coilovers sold by many of the well know brand name companies (including some of the US based Fiat specialist vendors). Some of those companies may specify a different level of quality/price-point from the manufacturer, in either direction. So being from the same manufacturer does not necessarily dictate that they are all the same. On the other hand it is extremely difficult to know exactly what the sellers are offering, in which case the experiences of others may be helpful. Unfortunately with the X there really isn't a lot of prior experiences to go by.

The thing that gets me is it's a similar situation with many other applications for different vehicles - in terms of coming from the same manufacturers, various quality levels offered, etc. But for those vehicles the general prices are significantly less...like as low as $300 for a set of four. Naturally those applications are more popular, and with more being sold they can be purchased from the manufacturer in larger quantities for less. But the cost to build the units really isn't any different, and the saving to purchase greater quantities isn't nearly as great as the retail price differences. So somewhere someone is making quite the profit.

Yes, D2 is available in standard spring rates; Street, Sport and Circuit. But as they are made to order you can have other spring rates as well. -At least I could order that from my Swedish reseller. Height, camber and shock is adjustable. You can lower the car as much as 70-80 mm with these. Different top plates are also available. The price for a set in Sweden is 15500 SEK (2400 AUD).
I am very happy with my "Circuit" D2, they are very stiff but works great on track. I am driving my X for fun only and I kind of like it stiff, but If you are looking for comfort go for the "Street" option.

Vick's has a Koni adjustable, not sure which Koni;

Out of curiosity I wrote to Yellowspeed to see if their manufacturer has an X coilover.
email From Vick's:
Sorry it is only the Koni Yellow inserts that go in that kit.

Koni Yellow is only rebound adjustable.

Reading Bjorn Nilson's comment regarding D2, I propose to contact D2 and ask if they can provide Coil Overs suitable for road use and fully adjustable for track use, as follows:
Front: Spring 275 lb, height adjustable spring perch, shock externally adjustable for compression and rebound
Rear: Spring 325 lb, height adjustable spring perch, shock externally adjustable for compression and rebound

My X is a 1980 Bertone. Appreciate comments and any additions. Also, please indicate if you would be interested in such a kit, providing reasonable price and shipping. I am assuming D2 will look favorably at multiple orders.

Looking at the info from D2 in your post #26, their standard spring rate on the "Street Version" are 5.0/7.2 kg/mm. That equates to 280 and 403 lbs/in front and rear respectively.

However you should be able to specify any spring rates you wish; as Bjorn said, "But as they are made to order you can have other spring rates as well."

So perhaps it would be best to first decide what rates you want for your particular use, and then inquire about getting that from D2.

OK. Will keep you posted. For some reason, I misquoted the spring rates.... should have been 175 Front and 225 rear, as recommended by MWB.
Why change springs etc if you're not looking for a performance increase? In my opinion the standard spring rate is way too soft, at least if no front sway bar installed. If you are planning to lowering the car (for improved performance and better looks) I think the MWB recommendation for street cars is too soft. There is a big risk that springs will bottom out and wheel hit fenders on bumpy roads. Of course this also depends on tire size/width and ET.
This happened to me with D2 circuit springs, no rubber stoppers and no antiroll bar (185/60 13 tires):

No big damage. It was easy to have the fender straightened, but will need some paint. I am thinking about having even harder springs in the front and maybe a sway bar.

Bjorn,
How much did you lower your front end, (from the stock height) when you installed the coilovers?
