SOHC Fiat hive mind, I need help!

I bought this Hormann replica air filter hpusing for my twin DCNF setup, but haven't been able to locate a filter element to fit. Does anyone know a part number or supplier?

Thanks!

Hi Chris,
I was not able to find anything. Even call the manufacturer Purolator.
I ended up using one that hd the correct height was was too small in diamter. I cut it and lengthened it with some solid material.

So the guy that sold it to you has no idea what filter element fits it? That's pretty poor aftersales service to say the least.

It would probably be from something out of the Fiat/alfa/lancia range, but seeing as Hormann are a german company it could also be from something german domestic market...

Some dimensions would help.

It probably is close, but I'd say the filter element is properly sized when it fits into the recess in the lid to locate it, dimensions A. B. C and D would be the clues needed.

When I bought my original Hörmann Filter, it came with an element.
The part number had been erased!
I ended up using a Ford element (the height of the element needs to be correct, too). I cut it and bridged the 2“ gap with a solid piece of plastic.
No pic of that unfortunately.

The 124 coupes and spiders that came with dual 40 IDFs had what we call a "turtle back" filter that has a similar body shape with two snorkels. I wonder if the filter element for that would fit. You might go over to MIrafiori.com and ask someone there with the turtleback filter to give you measurements for their filter.

The early Z cars had an oval air cleaner element. Might be worth checking those out. I would think the housing was designed around some readily available air filter? Good luck finding the right one, that looks like a nice air cleaner housing.

Worst case scenario you make a custom element to fit the housing. It's not difficult to do with some perforated "screen" material formed into the oval shape and size. Then cover it with generic foam air filter material. The foam is available from several filter companies and online sources. It is even offered in your choice of filtration levels (PPM ratings). Basically creating something like this:

The nice thing with this style is it is reusable with a simple cleaning of the foam. So you only need to make it once.

Thanks for all the brain storming. I saw that K&N filter and believe it to be too small to fit in the recess in the housing. I am not sure about the height as in is difficult to measure. That was my first try once I had the housing in my possession.

I bought an element for a "turtle back" housing and it is too tall. It is also a little wider and shorter, but could probably do the trick if the height were right. However, changing a $85 filter every 6000 miles does not sound fun. My hat's of to the 124 guys running this setup.

Ulix - what Ford application or part number did you use? How tall is your filter element?

Dr. Jeff - I am not generally a fan of foam filters. My understanding is they either flow or filter, but not both. I suppose this can be overcome with enough filter area. This is a good fall back idea.

I am hoping to come up with a part number that I can cross reference to an available element.

Anyone else with even a crazy idea... please jump in!

Thanks to all!

You are correct. I hadn't thought of that. Sadly, the shape will not work. K&N #E-2910. Any other ideas?

Thanks for the suggestion. This is exactly the kind of brain storming I need.

In my post above, I included the tag of the Ford filter as a pic.
I no longer own the filter setup, so I can‘t check it.
Thanks. I think I found the Wix version of that filter. I'll see if I can cross reference those numbers.

Chris

Okay - The Ford Escort Filter is 51 mm (2.02") tall, major OD is 372 mm (14.645"), major ID is 322 mm (12.677"), minor OD is 202 mm (7.944"), minor ID is 152 mm (5.984).

The groove in the Hormann replica housing measures 400 mm (15.75") major OD, 349 mm (13.75") major ID, 235 mm (9.25") minor OD, and 184mm (7.25") minor ID. That makes the groove 25.4 mm (1") wide. There is no way to measure the height needed, but 51 mm (2" ish) or slightly taller will work. I will need to add a seal to the lid, so I can use thicker or thinner material.

The Wix catalog seems to have the most information. I will go back and see if they show any filter close to what I need.

If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know!

Thanks for the help!

Chris

Incidentally, foam filters flow and filter fine but they need to be oiled with the proper filter oil...

I have been using K&N and Uni filters since my dirt bike days last century. Have had Uni pods on my IDFs....noooo problem. Never used them dry but seems to me a dry one would be better than no filter.
