037 Stradale Replica

They may well do, if you can get your hands on them. The Mini hinges are new aftermarket aluminium and quite cheap too!

I snagged myself a pair from Mini Spares in the UK. Ordered on Friday, made it all the way to TX on Monday afternoon. Looks identical to the ones you show. These will do nicely! Thanks for the tip.

That's where I got mine. They do need some fettling to the underside to make them fit the line of the roof. Mick welded two crush tubes into the roof box section and the hinges bolt up from underneath.

Thanks for the info and the picture. What is the purpose of the crush tubes? Just to make the bolts more accessible?

In looking at my roofline last night, I notice that if I just mount the hinge straight onto the metal of the car, the hinge pins will not be in alignment with each other, and so would bind as the clamshell is lifted. In order to get the pins to point at each other, I was planning on creating a small aluminum wedge to lift the outside edge of the hinge. It would be the same shape as the hinge and painted black, so I think it would not be noticeable. It would be pinned between the hinge and the roof, with the hinge mounting bolts passing through it and sandwiching it in there. Thoughts?

I think I got the top hinges, which have an angled base to take account of the curve in the Mini door. Mick had to fettle them to get the hinges to align as you said. The hinges bolt to a box section, the crush tubes go through the box to allow access to the bolt heads and prevent the box crushing.

Ah ok, makes sense on the tubes. I have not closely looked at that area to see about running the bolts through for the hinges.

I also got the top hinges, one left and one right. I didn't really see any "wedge" built into them, but then I haven't even taken them out of the bag yet. I'll take a closer look.

A bit more progress now that Mick is feeling better, aluminium panelling and brake/clutch systems going in...

Nice progress. Cunifer, its what brake lines were meant to be made from.

Glad Mick is feeling better, feeling well is key to doing much of anything.

Well, after a very long hiatus, this project has restarted! Modified wheel wells to better accommodate the wheels, Mick found that the tyres rubbed on his original replica.
Happy to see your here and on a few other venues. Welcome back and happy new year to you.

Hi, Rachael...!! Excellent project...! In your 2016 posting, with regard to the front suspension, you said "Mick's version takes a Ford Sierra bearing with custom 5x108 stud hub." I am curious to know whether Mick is turning a new hub or is he modifying a 4x108mm Sierra hub. Can you say?
Sincere Thanks....

Thank you all for the good wishes 👍👍

Hi Denny, the hubs are custom made, for Sierra bearings on the rear and Cortina bearings on the front.

Some more progress; fuel tanks and hardware... I reckon it's costing me around a grand per photo!
