037 body kit

Hello. I just picked up this 77 scorpion from a collector in Jersey City NJ. It was not running but pretty solid and nice paint. I have always wanted a Montecarlo. My question is 037 kits. I love the rally look and it seems to be the only way to get the Euro bumpers. Any direction? Has anyone explored a 037 kit?
thank you, Anthony

You'll probably have to reach out to the seller and ask about ideal mounting options and how wide the track will need to be. The new track width may well be a foot or so wider than stock, which will take a lot of wheel to fill out. Then, are the stock hubs and suspension (X1/9 based, mind you) up to the extra weight and various loads?

Factory 037s were all tube-frame front and rear of the central tub. I think you'll have to do a significant amount of chopping and fabrication to get these panels to fit properly.

If you just want Euro Montecarlo-style bumpers, The Monte Hospital sells them (currently sold out, but they'll have more eventually). With shipping, they should be $3k or so.

I was told my a friend that the Monte Hospital is on borrowed time and the owner was supposed to call it quits at the end of last year.
that added to my (somewhat) frantic search.

The owners of TMH announced that another company was buying the business and it was revamping its website as part of the deal. The new website came online just a couple months ago and I think everything is going ahead as planned.

There are Montecarlo bumpers available on the Facebook groups. Fabricating some 037 buttress scoops and rear grille is simple. 037 rallycars didn’t have rear bumpers. I have a source for the Stradale rear bumper however haven’t tried one on a narrower Scorpion/Montecarlo rear to know how much wider and if would have to be shortened to look correct.

Stradale rear grille you have taillights already and just need to create center slats. Rally grille is neat being able to see engine through grille.

To pull off either, you’ll need either Montecarlo suspension springs or coilovers (Konis from MWB easiest in N America). Otherwise once weight is removed the already too tall Scorpion springs decompress skyward.

Just because my red 77 Scorpion looked identical to yours. I swap out rear grille depending when I want the 037 style.

Just doing a Montecarlo conversion and un-federalizing a Scorpion is a lot of work. How long do you want to own a project you can’t enjoy?

This yellow 77 I built with some 037 styling.

With Volumex supercharger. Which leads me to say only doing a bodykit without massive supporting performance modifications to Scorpion would be disappointing.

Finding good double bubble roofs is difficult these days.

Dedo’s Montecarlo 037 I think is a Fibercar.

This was a smoking deal.

BAT 037

Are you also in mid-Atlantic or NE US? There is a Cateroni in Boston and Stradales in NY.

I was looking at this

Not only do 037's have a different wheelbase, they also have a wider track. So you can't put something like that directly onto a Scorpion and have it come out looking right. The wheels will sit about 4 inches inside the fenders and it will look terrible.

If you just want a more 037-ish look, then you need to find front and rear bumpers, double bubble top, and an 037-style front hood. Maybe a headlight conversion. That's basically what my car was before I began the 037 project.

None of that stuff is easy to find, although you will find internet lore of "I'm about to start making that stuff". Not only is it not easy to find, it's not easy to do. Getting fiberglass to fit and look good is a messy job and it takes forever.

I don't mean to dissuade you from your goals, but I do want you to go into it realistically. To get the car you see in the pics above from stock to there was easily more than a thousand hours. To do a full-on 037 thing, I work on my car faithfully but I am at 8 years and counting, and still quite a ways to go.

Good luck with your project, whatever direction it takes.

Nice looking Lancia, I like the tail lights.
