I suspect you will need to cut them and grind the ends.

Seriously...
If you don't want to do it Clarkson style, cutting the coils will work for what you are trying to do. You want the look more than improved handling, right? I have cut coils in the past and it has worked well. Start with a half coil and go from there. You can always cut more if you want to go lower. Cutting them also changes the spring rate some as well.
