RED X19

Happy New Year right back atcha MK...

I admire your attempts to do so much work on your car yourself. Even the Pros here in the states either have a Pro do their interiors or have a full time upholstery specialist on staff.

I find even with the best machines and equipment it takes a lot of SKILL that needs to be developed over many years to do acceptable work. I have often recovered seats and installed carpeting but I'll never attempt a headliner (again) or even attempt to sew covers together.

More power to ya!

Keep us apprised of your progress... and sorry about your car getting broken into. Proves that THEY are out there, multiplying exponentially and worldwide...

My best regards,

Tony

Janis, nice job on the BMW seats. You have a natural talent for interior work. I'm sure your X interior will come out great.

Interesting color choice for the carpet. I don't think I've seen that before. I'll be looking forward to seeing the results. And $200-E for all of the materials you noted is a good price; here even fake Alcantara is expensive.

Does your wagon have an alarm? I'm guessing the break in was cut short by an alarm.

Tony, I’m doing it myself to get experience and have agood time by doing it.
I have twice done headliner on Classic Mini, it is alot easier than restoring seats, at least on Mini.

Sewer asked 300€ only for job for both seats, will take a risk and try myself.

Jeff, it have allarm, but I’m not sure was it activated and did or didn’t I close the doors :D
Carpet will be black also, I just like that brown color a lot.

Is it possible to cut windshield from another windshield? Am not sure from which shape could suit.

Called to a lot of local glass sellers.
Only one can offer it. “Last piece in a stock”, where is this stock have no idea, but asked 450€, member of Xweb from Netherlands asks 350€. I don’t get it, because wages there are twice as big as here.
Found out that it is produced by Saint Gobain. Will try to contact them, maybe they own that one special piece :D

For 450€ I could glue my windshield with vintage look back in and spend rest 440€ in petrol to go on vacation to Portugal :D

I kind of remember someone here was discussing the possibility of cutting a section from another vehicle's windshield to make one for the X. But I don't think it happened - however not certain. And I do not know what other windshields they were considering. Maybe you can find that thread on the forum?

It starts to look like a car :)

I took a Super Beetle windshield to a local glass shop and they cut about 3" off of the top of it. We did have an agreement before we started: "If it breaks I'll bring you another one and we'll try again". He charged me $2 (in 1980). This was for my 750 Allemano.
It was a simple single cut, it worked but anything with more than one cut might take a couple trys. I imagine the price would be higher now and don't know if you could even find someone willing to take a shot at it if it took multiple cuts.

Janis...

I believe windshields are still available in the US at around $350 dollars or more... but alas shipping and insurance would probably take it much higher than the prices you have already been quoted "locally".

I do like the way the body is coming along as well as the interior. Keep up the good work.

There is a shop in SoCal that specializes in doing this. He uses various windshields as a starting base and cuts the desired section out to get the needed shape. With his extensive experience, he is able to look at what it is going in and pick a good donor candidate to work from. Very talented. But I don't know what the cost is. I am willing to bet there are such people in other countries, where the resources are limited and they make up for it with ingenuity.

I checked with Carglass Sweden (Belron Group) a year ago to replace the windshield due to wear (small scratches, small 'smoky" areas close to the frame). They could easily find a new windshield, and with my classic car insurance the cost would be just 100 EUR.

Aren’t You planing a trip to Baltics? :D

Janis, the cost savings would almost pay for you to take a trip to Sweden. Could make for a nice little holiday, but I think I'd wait for summer. ;)
Ferry to Stocholm and back costs ~50€ if recall corectly.
But I don’t want to sail for three days :D
