Volvo 745 Pickup + 4.8l V8 conversion

I remember when my neighbor came home with a brand new one of those in silver. I think it was a GLT model or something is it had power everything. What motor and trans is in the one you've got? I was actually thinking of finding an old 850 Turbo wagon a few years back as my ability to haul large items were severely hampered when a semi totaled my pickup.

This one is the stripped down base model, so auto trans, non-turbo 8v 4 cylinder "redblock"

I agree Hussein. Not the prettiest example of an "EPA Tractor" I've seen but it is a good example what they look like in Sweden. They are mostly built by 13-15 year old kids learning to cut and weld. They are commonly looking like tasteless Christmas threes with lots of bling bling. Most grown ups hate them, but personally I am positive to the tractor culture as it is a good way for young kids to learn about cars and engines. Many famous car builders in Sweden begun their careers with hacking up a rusty Volvo when they were young.
Personally I prefer the old school tractors built on Volvo Duett but they have become rare:

The "EPA tractor" law for road use is an interesting concept. As far as I know we don't have such a exclusion here - at least not in the state I grew up in. I can see where it would attract the under age kids wanting to make something they can drive legally.

When I was that age the closest thing was to make a off-road vehicle ("dune buggy") of some sort so we could drive on dirt roads in out laying rural areas. I'm not sure if that was even legal technically, but we could easily get away with it in my area. So I started cutting up old cars and building 'makeshift' off-roaders at a very young age. That was how I learned to do fabrication work and the beginning of my customization and modification skills. Perhaps it's the reason I have no reservation to hack up any vehicle and make it what I want it to be. And learning to drive on dirt roads might be why I still get a kick out of sliding a car around.

EDIT - link to Regina +T conversion thread on Turbobricks I'll need to add a turbo at some point in the proceedings.

Spent some time just cleaning up the mildew off the wagon, cleaning the motor, and decontaminating the interior

want to use my old 964 leather wheel

and the depot lights I had on my old 965 - I'll need to source the grille brackets and air guides tho....

bay is substantially cleaner - need to do some maintenance on the motor & leaking power steering, reattach the missing alt brackets, etc. - I hate working on grease covered motors. I won't be doing the bodywork until later in the year, so I just want to make sure it runs & can be moved as needed until then

Driver's door handle lever was snapped - I had a spare PS lever, so I stripped them both & transferred the base bracket & pivot

wagon still looks like ass, but at least it's not covered in mildew any more

I had a 745 brick when the kids were small. Best family car I ever had with lots of space for trolleys, inflated plastic swans and crocodiles etc when going to the coast on hot summer days. A new Volvo is far from that practical.
Volvo 745/945 was the most common car in Sweden and it got the nickname "Sosse Container" (Sosse=Social Democrat) but I don't know why.

I have always like Volvo wagons, that one was the ultimate in box which means ultimate in usability. I think a 245 was taller inside but I may be mistaken. My Honda Element is similar in volume efficiency but has very little weight capacity.

Cool project to come. Can’t wait to see all the X1/9 parts crossing over...

The 700 series tailgate and cargo area were designed big enough to accept a standard Euro pallet; I had a turbo wagon for a while, and still have a 1970 145 (pushrod engined wagon) we bought in 1989.

I've had a few wagons over the years - it's been about 16 years since I had a 900 wagon. The 700/900 does have wider cargo bay than the 240 - they really squared out the opening. I'm looking forward to making the pickup. The experience I acquired doing the Dallara/ Dallara 2.0 made me realize I can do it, no problem. :)

Most of my older wagons:

seeing as there are lots of random ovlov wagon pics in here, you may find this funny.

but would make a great extended bed pickup.

A good friend had a 242GT Bertone for many years, nice car with nice lines.

I'remember it as a 4 cylinder b20 style engine, and wore a bertone badge, chopped roofline.... is there a 142GT with a chopped roof? it was a loooong time ago so maybe the engine was a 6, either way I always thought his particular example looked quite cool with nice lines and I think I've only seen one other the same here where I live.

B20 pushrod, or B21/23/230 ohc? Here in the states, the only 240 with the B20 was the first year 1975, the B21 wasn't ready until part way through the model year.

The 262C (that's the Bertone 242 with the chopped roof) was available with the PRV V6 or the B230FT turbo 4;
the last one I saw gave my '70 wagon thumbs-up. :)

no if it was a 4 cyl it was OHC so probabaly a B21/B23/230, I'm certainly not au-fait on volvo nomeclature so the B20 was a guess, I don't recall it being turbocharged but that is possible... this was back in the early / mid 1980''s and my Friend Clive bought it from the original one owner, might have been 10 years old when he got it and was quite immaculate and it did go quite well.

B21 was Volvo's first ohc; B23 was when it was enlarged to 2.3L; B230 is a low-friction version of the 2.3; when turbocharged and intercooled became the B230FT, offered in the 262C by 1981.
The PRV V-6 engine had lubrication issues; it would not be unreasonable to replace the V-6 with the I-4, turboed or not.

Bertone 262C was only B27/B28 :).
B21FT ran through 85 on the 240T, as it had K-Jet & Volvo never updated it.B23F/T was used until 84 - B230FT did not arrive until 1985; the Coupe was gone by then.

located another tailgate. Had to remove glass & chop it up ahead of time - won't fit in my C30 otherwise. I left enough to account for the tailgate cap.

After washing the bay, the engine wouldn't start. Turned out, washing it killed the coil. On the backside, the epoxy is all cracked, so obviously water got it. The used one I got has minor cracking, so I'll cut it back & re-epoxy the backside before moisture gets in.

Since I had the parts, I added cruise whilst I was under the dash adding vacuum line for the turbo gauge that will be going along with the +T in eventually. Had to dig around for the harnesses - it's been at least 15 years since I worked on a 700 series.

brain & pedal switch.
