Finally received all the parts to finally start putting my X back together. One major project is the transmission and engine. I was lucky to find and salvage a rebuild that only had about 3-4K miles on it. My main conern now is that my original tranny was a 5 speed, and the new one I have that is mounted to this newer engine is only a 4 spd. Since I am fairly new to the X scene, I am not sure if I can just xfer the tranny to the existing engine, or should I consider putting the newer one in? My other question is how to tell what size the engine is... My original is the 1500cc Carbed, and I am not sure if the new one is also a 1500 or a 1300...

I also obtained an MSI electronic ignition system with the newer engine, but unfortunately, there are no docs to show how to wire it up again.....

Any help would be definitely appreciated.. This is my first foreign car, and probably not my last

Here's a link to the Model ID table at Mirafiori.

Just compare to what ID you have on your block.

http://www.mirafiori.com/id/tablex19.html

As far as mating the 4speed to a 1500 block, I think you need to change the flywheel, axles, and starter to a 1300 style, but other more experienced should chime in on this one.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I think that you may have to change your axle shafts as well. I know that I've recently pulled the tranny from my 79 and my 76 and they are different.

I have mine torn apart right now. If you need any other help, let me know. I'm trying to locate a digital camera, so I might be able to send pictures if I find one.

Let me know,

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->You can use the 5 spd shift lever and shift rod with the 4 spd gearbox (but not the other way around). To convert a 5 spd car to a 4 spd transmission you will need the following 4 spd parts: Transmission (duh), flywheel, clutch, halfshafts, uprights (hub carriers), starter, separator plate.

Either transmission can be used with either chassis or engine provided you have the correct stuff to go with it. It all bolts right in. I have converted many cars (either way) and its a fairly simple swap.
