drove the '87 in to work today for the 1st time.

clutch and trans are doing fine.

no apparent cooling system leak, as i feared.

the only annoyance, aside from no stereo, yet,
was:

the tach reading is way low.

it works but seems to be running at a reduced scale.

e.g., idle => 200rpm, 5000rpm =>2000 rpm

the P/O tells me that it was an intermittent problem for him, too.

any clues, before i tear the dash apart...

Got the dash apart enough to reach a finger to the backside of the tach and could make the problem come and go pressing on it. Never could get it out to fix it though. The X1/9 dash is much easier to remove!

Could also be low voltage to the dash, but I'd expect you would see that on the voltmeter. If the voltmeter is reading fine, then remove the tach from the instrument cluster and reheat all the solder joints on the small circuit card.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

One of the local yards has an X that isn't far from the crusher... Kyle and I have stripped everything that we could forsee needing, and last time I was there the instrument cluster was still intact - I'd be happy to get a quote and pull it if you want it. It's from an earlier car, so it has the "Fiat" instead of the correct "Bertone" logo in the top center of the dash, but oddly, it does have the 140mph speedo (never seen one with that combo before, but it may be more common than I think).

I have exactly the same problem, and I don't have a clue on what to check. (My '86 idles @ 500, and redlines at 2800-3000 max!)

I hope to get some leads here, I do have an extra cluster but I am not very motivated to remove the panel because I am affraid to loose the already shaky speedometer.

but i did sort out a LOT of marginal electrical connections and clean things up while installing a stereo this weekend.

i suspect, as someone else pointed out, a poor
connection somewhere.

i thought it might be a bad ground somewhere.
but i cleaned and replaced all the grounds that
i could find, so far.

next step will be to pull the instrument cluster.

maybe this weekend.
but the '78 clutch might take precedence,
not to mention the wife and kids and holoween...
