ABARTH 5-SPEED TRANSMISSION FOR SALE on EBAY

Frank L. Di Gioia

True Classic
Not mine or in any way related. There's a 5-speed just listed as REBUILT for, gasp, $4750 or best offer. Rather rare today. Best of luck. I found it while looking under heading of "Fiat 850 -(fits Fiat 850)" This is for a rear engine 600 based car.

Hey Frank. If...you dont know how to copy and paste a link to an item ( like I just did above ) - it is actually really easy. And good to know. Simply:

1) when you have something like an Ebay listing on your screen, just move your mouse so that if hovers in the light blue box near the top of the screen that in this case says " https://www.ebay.com/itm/fiat-600-....etc"

2) When your cursor is in that box, then "right click" on your mouse. A box will then appear. "left click" on COPY

3) Exit from that screen and go to Xweb. When posting like you did above, start a new paragraph and then "right click" on your mouse. A box will then appear. "left click" to choose PASTE. A link to that item will now magically appear for all to see !!!!

That same link you copied will be saved in your computer until you replace it with another link by COPYing it.

You can use this same method also when emailing someone else. Just "right click" in an email and the link will magically appear.

Read the steps above and give it a try. Hopefully you have now learned a new computer skill. And will link us to some more cool stuff.....

Wow! Thanks Doug. I'm more used to how it worked in the dark ages. In the 70-80's when I was a member of the Abarth Registry Gerry Rothman published a newsletter every 3 months. To sell an item you sent him the info and a photograph and he listed it under classified advertisements. It usually only took maybe FOUR MONTHS to move an item...Thanks again, I'll put my new skill to use as soon as possible,

This wouldn't work on an 850 coupe, right?

Nope, wrong engine rotation and the 850 engine is offset from the trans. The 600 starter will be sitting in the gas tank, too.
That being said, however, anything can be worked out if you really wanted to.

Sort of, maybe. A 600 and 850 engine sit at different angles so the opening in the firewall would need to be modified. The transaxle mounts are also different and would require modification of the body underneath. Then the shift pattern is different. I installed an 850 transaxle in a 600 way back. Cosentino used to have instructions on how to do it. So you should be able to do it the other way around. But what would you gain unless you were racing? I have a close ratio 850 transaxle available for cheap...

Don't forget that unlike an 850, a 600/600D transaxle has a straight cut first gear which is a bit of a pain. Also results in premature wear if you don't shift carefully.

That 5 speed has a stock 8:39 R&P and stock 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears ratios so nothing special there at all. For $4750 all you're getting is a 5th gear ratio of 0.75 versus stock 600 4th of 0.896. I would have expected a close ratio gearset and better R&P ratio. I have to wonder what "remanufactured" means. Did original gears get replaced with stock 600 parts? How many new parts were used in the rebuild and exactly what was replaced? Who did the work I wonder? It takes special know-how and tools to set up the R&P using the correct and hard to find (I think) shims.

I have a 600D transaxle that I spent several years finding 100% replacement parts for it all over the place plus I bought a 9/39 R&P for it (new). I sent everything to a Fiat specialist to get rebuilt and IIRC I have well over $5K into it and it's not a 5-speed. If that 5-speed had all the "right stuff" in it and was fully rebuilt and properly, I think it'd be worth much more than the asking price.

Scuderia Topolino in Germany sells a 5-speed 600 transaxle for 3550 Euro. They don't say if it's new, reconditioned or fully rebuilt and it seems to also have stock 600 gear ratios.

One more possibility here. If you could find one of the PBS 600/1300 128 conversions the trouble might be worth it.
An 1116/1290/1500 fits really nicely in the 850 engine compartment. (OK, I know it fits in an 850 Spider.)
I converted my 850 H/Production Spider to a 1300/128 engined autocrosser.
Firewall needs mods for starter and water piping out of the head. I removed the firewall. Then the gas tank had to go.
Engine/trans mounts need to be made.
Radiator moved to the front.
Shift linkage needs to change to 600.
Gear drive starter is really helpful.

It would be a lot more work on a street car than on a stripped race car.
Worth the trouble? YMMV.
