A question about my 5 speed transmission - I'm in the process of putting it all back together (using the service manual and the 5 spd 101 text). So far, so good. Problem is this - after test fitting the main case when I go to put the mainshaft and countershaft bearings back on they don't fit properly. One of the bearings has a smaller center opening - I'm 99% sure that's the countershaft bearing. It just won't go on far enough - probably a 1/4 inch short of where it should be. The bushing is on the shaft - it seems to be preventing the bearing from seating fully. Am I doing something wrong? If I take the other bearing (with the larger opening) it fits fine. Got the transmission used from somebody (completely in pieces) so I'm sure if I have the right parts. Almost seems like I should have two of the larger opening bearings.

The ends of both shafts, where the bearing sits, are the same size so either bearing should fit on either shaft correctly. However, on the 5 spd, the bearing for the input shaft has a split inner race. You must first fit half the inner race, then the bearing, then the other half of the inner race, then the splined or keyed 5th gear and retaining nut. For the counter shaft, the bearing has a single piece inner race and does not come apart.

The inner races of both bearings should have the same ID. If yours doesn't then I would have to assume you have the wrong bearing. Compare the two bearings, if one doesn't measure the same as the other (ID, OD & width) then I am sure you have the wrong one.

After reading your post carefully, I noticed you said the bushing is keeping the bearing from seating fully. The bearings don't have bushings themselves. There are bushings, or sleeves, that go inside each gear, each has a lip that acts as a spacer between it and the next gear (with the exception of 3rd which has no lip). Pull the case half back off and make sure each shaft is correctly seated in its bearing in the inner case half. Then compare how the gears line up in the stack. If they don't line up, you probably have a sleeve turned the wrong way somewhere in the stack.

I did that myself while re-assembling my 5-speed for the first time. Fortunately, I caught it & turned it right around before I got too far ahead of myself.

The two gears (one I'm assuming is 4th, the other is on the other shaft) line up perfectly. After each of those two gears there's a silver retaining ring (bushing) that is angled on the side away from the gear. All of this resides on the inside of the housing.

Now, in looking at the two bearings they are definitely different. One has ball bearings around the inside of the outer ring and no inner ring at all - this bearing fits perfectly. The other has an outer ring, bearings (that you can't really see because they have a black cover over them) and then an inner ring. This inner ring is the piece that prevents the entire bearing from sitting down far enough (as it comes in contact with the bushing listed above).

Again, my lack of technical knowledge here leaves me confused (not sure what an inner race is, etc). I am learning a ton from you guys and having a blast trying to figure all of this out - the only problem is that I'm dying to get the car on the road again!

The problem is the "silver retaining ring after each of those two gears", not the "inner ring" of the other bearing.

You need to remove the "silver retaining ring" from the counter shaft. These are not "retaining rings" but the split inner race of one of the bearings. Once you have it removed, fit the bearing which has an outter and inner ring, it should now bottom out on the gear and fit in the case normally. Don't forget its snap ring.

The bearing that has "ball bearings inside of the outter ring and no inner ring" is missing its inner race (or the ring inside of the ball bearings). The two "silver retaining rings" are actually the split inner race (or inner ring) of the bearing that has "an outter ring and ball bearings inside the outter ring and no inner ring". If you carefully examine the "silver retaining rings" you will probably find that the side that is cut at an angle is actually curved. If you remove the two rings you should be able to fit them together to form the inner bearing race of the "bearing that has an outter ring and ball bearings inside of the outter ring but no inner ring".

Fit one of the split inner races to the input shaft with the angled side facing out. Now you can fit the bearing and the other half of its inner race into position. Again, don't forget the snap ring. Then fit the intermediate extention plate and 5th gears.
