web page. is this a concern with most older (70's) cars? or does the X have unique rust problems?

The car I am interested in has been sitting
out in the open for 2 or so years worth of rain
and winters. I didn't look under it, but the
body has no noticable rust on the outside. can
anybody predict what the bottom/engine of this
is going to look like?

it's in a different location than me, so I can't
just go look... how annoying.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->ALL steel cars rust when exposed to the elements. How quickly and whether it matters depends on their construction... X-1/9s have structural areas that can trap moisture and cause premature death.

Places to examine:
- door sills (inside, outside, underneath)
- strut towers (use flashlight & probe)
- subframe mounts (flashlight)
- lower edge of windshield

The real X-heads probably know more locations (like bumper mounts?) to inspect, but if the above items are intact, then the car is useable.

Most Xs, unlike Spiders and Lancias, don't rust to death in the PNW.

Ahh, the fact that you can use HTML commands inside this text is great!

I love it when people use that feature! It opens up all kinds of cool possibilities... like sharing pictures :)

As to the original rust issue, these guys are right on the money with their advice! The only one thing I would add is that (at least in the Pacific Northwest) "you never know unless you look!"

Here's an example: There was a light metallic blue '76 X1/9 shell sitting in a field out in the country south of here for years. YEARS! The interior was toast except the dash & door panels, the engine was out and the car had no wheels on it. There it sat on its belly in the tall grass through wind, rain, snow, sun, more rain, for at least the years I knew it was there - probably longer...

One day not long ago I was driving by and saw that the property owners were finally removing the X from its resting place! They had wheels on it and it was partially assembled, anyway. I stopped and asked if I could take a look at it. The thing had NO RUST on the entire underbody!! It looked virtually immaculate down there! I was amazed. The strut towers were not only intact, but looked absolutely great. Even the menacing windshield frame was free of flakes or bubbles.

Since that event, I have been a firm believer in "anything is possible", so don't write an X off without first seeing for yourself - no matter where it may have been sitting :)

Peace...
