Everything seemed fine, but the car would not start after that. I got a jump start, and it started up fine, everything worked. I then drove home and by the time I got there, my lights were out, nothing working again. My guess is a bad battery that is not holding a charge, or it could be the alt again...I just installed a new one durring the summer. Check the voltage at the battery with an ohm meter. Should be over 12 volts when the car is running (in the range of 13 volts is ideal). If not, its not charging the battery.
Did you check all of the battery cables?

Don't know if you reviewed the problem I had last October for a frustrating THREE WEEKS... but mine came down to the damn ground strap on the trans to the frame.
Coupla' things...
1. I finally detected this when I used a DIGITAL VOM as I could clearly see the difference of a .61 vdc loss at the starter. I read 12.65 vdc at the battery and 12.04 vdc at the starter. This is after all new cables, the battery, starter, and alternator removed and tested professionally, and the entire POSITIVE side of the electrical circuit PROVEN to be OK, including the ignition switch.
It was the DIGITAL VOM that drove me back to the ground strap (that I had cleaned and reinstalled two weeks prior... just for maintenance). I found it was NOT TIGHT... not LOOSE, just NOT TIGHT and my son remembers he grabbed it to pull himself out from under the car also... Two turns of a 13mm socket and ALL the trouble was gone!
2. Your alternator... I removed mine from the REAR trunk access panel... into the engine compartment... standing up in back of the car. Mine's a '79... Do '77's have the same access?
I used to try and get it from underneath... this way its a breeze! But if you use the digital VOM at the battery and have 13.6 vdc... then its good. Again, with a bad ground strap... it won't put out at all (no COMPLETE circuit) on the car... but it will bench test perfectly... which was my dilemma! (Same with the starter)
As for the battery... it load tested fine, all the accessories worked fine because they are all GROUNDED to the BODY... but the starter wouldn't handle the load... because it didn't have a GOOD GROUND thru the block, trans, and THEN to the BODY...

If it still runs, the alt is ok and the battery is suspect. If it dies, the alt is not doing it's job.

That's kinda what happened to me too... proved all the componants... then proved all the "linkage" (wiring) on the positive side... then it had to be the negative side with the ground strap. Had I used a DIGITAL VOM FIRST... I would have clearly seen the .5 vdc difference in voltage.
I only had an hour or two at a crack to work on mine and not every day. Overall, it was laid up 3 weeks until I found it. Learned more about the electrical system than I ever wanted to know!

Everything seemed fine, but the car would not start after that. I got a jump start, and it started up fine, everything worked. I then drove home and by the time I got there, my lights were out, nothing working again. My guess is a bad battery that is not holding a charge, or it could be the alt again...I just installed a new one durring the summer. Check the voltage at the battery with an ohm meter. Should be over 12 volts when the car is running (in the range of 13 volts is ideal). If not, its not charging the battery.
Did you check all of the battery cables?

Don't know if you reviewed the problem I had last October for a frustrating THREE WEEKS... but mine came down to the damn ground strap on the trans to the frame.
Coupla' things...
1. I finally detected this when I used a DIGITAL VOM as I could clearly see the difference of a .61 vdc loss at the starter. I read 12.65 vdc at the battery and 12.04 vdc at the starter. This is after all new cables, the battery, starter, and alternator removed and tested professionally, and the entire POSITIVE side of the electrical circuit PROVEN to be OK, including the ignition switch.
It was the DIGITAL VOM that drove me back to the ground strap (that I had cleaned and reinstalled two weeks prior... just for maintenance). I found it was NOT TIGHT... not LOOSE, just NOT TIGHT and my son remembers he grabbed it to pull himself out from under the car also... Two turns of a 13mm socket and ALL the trouble was gone!
2. Your alternator... I removed mine from the REAR trunk access panel... into the engine compartment... standing up in back of the car. Mine's a '79... Do '77's have the same access?
I used to try and get it from underneath... this way its a breeze! But if you use the digital VOM at the battery and have 13.6 vdc... then its good. Again, with a bad ground strap... it won't put out at all (no COMPLETE circuit) on the car... but it will bench test perfectly... which was my dilemma! (Same with the starter)
As for the battery... it load tested fine, all the accessories worked fine because they are all GROUNDED to the BODY... but the starter wouldn't handle the load... because it didn't have a GOOD GROUND thru the block, trans, and THEN to the BODY...

If it still runs, the alt is ok and the battery is suspect. If it dies, the alt is not doing it's job.

That's kinda what happened to me too... proved all the componants... then proved all the "linkage" (wiring) on the positive side... then it had to be the negative side with the ground strap. Had I used a DIGITAL VOM FIRST... I would have clearly seen the .5 vdc difference in voltage.
I only had an hour or two at a crack to work on mine and not every day. Overall, it was laid up 3 weeks until I found it. Learned more about the electrical system than I ever wanted to know!

It was a 16 guage wire, but I changed it to 10, then I hooked it up too loose, and that was my problem...<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
