I took a look at the task at hand and decided I cannot do this without a lot of advice. I have no manual for my car. Can't find one. I need to remove the belts(probably all of them if there are more than one)and it seems that I need to remove the engine to get to them. Is this so? And if it is so... how do I do it? If it is not so... how do I do it? Sorry... I need somewhat detailed instructions for, as I've said, I have no manual. Also, this car is my daily driver and I need it to be reliable and running.
Thanks for the Help.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Here is an overview:
Remove the alternator/water pump belt by loosening both bolts on the alternator, the alternator will then slide towards the engine making belt removal reasonably easy, they are a bit tight though, avoid using screw drivers as levers which may damage it.
Next remove the timing belt cover, the lower screw is really fiddly and some recommend removing the road wheel to gain access from underneath, but I managed without, Next is REALLY important, align the engine to top dead centre, there is a mark on the flywheel and cam shaft pulley, make sure they both line up to their marks and put a dab of white paint on all three pulleys, that way if they move you can easily line them back up, next loosen the idler bolt and release the idler bearing tension, you can use a pair of mole grips to hold the tensioner lever back while your working, then carefully slide the belt off, the lower pulley is a bit of a nightmare and very fiddly to slide the belt off, it's even harder to get it back on, but with patience it shouldn’t be too much of a problem, then slide the new belt back on, make sure it’s not caught up on any brackets of bolts, then release the tensioner and tighten, push the car while in gear to rotate the engine one full turn and listen for any knocks which may indicate something is wrong, avoid rocking the car backwards as the belt could slip a tooth, then retension the idler, replace the alternator belt, turn the engine over on the starter with the HT lead disconnected and listen for any knocks, then cover your ears and start her up.
You should still be able to order a manual through Amazon, or a local bookshop, or try the UK X owners club they do overseas orders, www.x1-9ownersclub.org.uk

When you say you need to replace your belts, do you mean the alternator belt AND the timing belt? Do you have air conditioning?

Apart from the advice given so far, you can also use the search function to find more in the forum archives. There is A LOT of info on this stored there. Just click the search link on the main forum page and when you get the screen with the search box, type in "replace belt" or "timing belt". There will be plently of info in there, of course you may also ask again out here on the main forum page if you still have questions

I am curious why you say you need to replace your belts? From the way you said it, it sounds like you are not certain. What reason do you have for wanting to change the belts, and do you also mean the timing belt or just the v-belts? -Mac.

Seriously, If I want to search, I try to do it before shop time as opposed to during it, but even if you are busy wrenchin' & hit a snag, it still works out to be a good opportunity to just wash up, grab a snack, take 5 and cruise the archives. Print the results out if you need to take 'em back to the shop, works out alright ( now that the results page bug is fixed

Hugo, what system (PC, Mac etc), OS (Windows 95, 98, 2k, Unix etc) and browser version (IE4, Netscape 4.7, IE5 etc) are you using?

And when did you get the error page? Did it happen when you clicked the "search archives" link on the main forum page or when you clicked the "go" button next to the search box?

The search feature has been having problems, but I thought we had it fixed. I need to know your system info so I can troubleshoot why it still won't work for you. Let me know and we'll get you in!

I will open a chat window now and leave it open while I work. I'd love to change it but it is resident on a part of the server that is accessible only to N54 Admin, not me
sad.gif

I agree that the action form looks questionable, but I would like to try some things on my own before I have to go and try to make them change their code.

I have an idea. All we need now is Hugo to come back and be our guinea pig
tongue.gif

HUGO - you will see there are now TWO DIFFERENT links to search with: "search in same window" and "search in new window"

I want you to try both. Go to one and make a search or two. Then go to the other and make a search or two. Tell me what happens on both.

This is because the "same window" search is running on N54's code and the "new window" search is running on the code I threw together just now as a test. I want to see if one works but not the other for you. Let us know what you get - this goes for anyone else who has had the search foul up on you lately too, but especially Hugo (since he still can't get to it) -Mac.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I am completely humbled by your generosity and knowledge! Thanks to all. After posting last night I went to the web page of one of the parts dealers and found a manual, hopefully I will get it soon. To answer all the questions:
Why do I need to replace the belts? One is almost cabage. The car was in storage for a long time (it had 19300 miles at purchase...at least that was the odometer reading, more on that if requested)and one belt was making a lot of noise.Upon inspection i found out it is almos gone, so I plan to replace all three belts plus the timing belt (possible dry rot on all). Another point to ask. Do I have three belts or two? I have AC. I can see two but the parts book at the store says I need three(???).
I would be interested in a copy of the manual if you put it to disc, as long as it is a good copy; what would be the price?.
Should I mess around with the timing belt? How do I know if it is bad? Right now the car runs great but I am concerned with the state of the rubber of the belts(the dry rot thing). I need it as a daily driver because I do not have money for another car.
Is an 80 manual good for an 82?... How should I know? I am new at this X thing... you are the experts, you tell me if I can go get another year model's book.
And lastly:One belt needs replacing for sure, should I change all the others since I am going to go in there?
Thanks again... may God repay you with children or friends who will lend you money.
Hugo.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Seriously, advice is what we're here for.

First, glad you're getting a manual. Did you buy the one made by Haynes, or is it a Chiltons, or a factory manual?

Well, I am inclined to agree with your appraisal of the belts. Yes you should replace the timing belt. Have you ever replaced a car's timing belt?

I cannot say for certain without seeing your car for myself, but I am pretty sure you should only have 2 v-belts (one going around the crank pulley, the alternator and the water pump, the other from crank pulley to a/c pump) and then the timing belt, concealed inside the plastic cover on the right-hand side of the engine.

When you look into the engine compartment, how many v-belts do you see? Does it look the way I described?

There are differences between an '80 X and an '82 X, interior differences, electrical differences, among others, but for general engine maintenance the important thing is that they do both use the 1500 engine, so you should be able to get by for now with just what you have coming, and we will do what we can to help you here
happy.gif

And yes, you should just go ahead and replace ALL the belts at once, especially if you intend to make this car your daily driver! Running around on a timing belt when you don't know its age is asking for trouble.

You're going to find out as you go that the local JoBob's Auto Parts store is not going to be of much use to you anymore with this car. They will almost never have any parts you need. Even if you go to just buy something simple like a belt, you're looking at least at a 50/50 chance they'll give you the wrong one.

I'm going to go mess with that d@#%! search glitch again and see if we can get it to work for you. Peace, -Mac

Seriously, there will be a number of parts that will break pretty quickly from sitting, and a number of electrical gremlins to chase because of corrosion. Expect it to get a bit frustrating at first, especially having to mail order most everything. With the help of this list you'll get through it and it will settle down to become a pretty reliable car.

Order an electrical troubleshooting manual from Vicks or IAP (if Vicks has them then they are probably cheaper). It's very handy and easier to walk you through diagnosis if you have it. First suspect for any electrical problem is the fuse panel - polish the springy contacts holding the fuses as they corode, and slightly pinch them together as they fatugue and don't hold the fuse well. European fuse panels are total crap, period. Second suspect is corroded ground connections to the body. The electrical manual makes all this easy to locate.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Here's my three cents worth...

1. Get a manual and study what you wanna do FIRST. Most are at best, hardly adequate. (Think outside the "proverbial box"... remembering there is an "access door" of sorts for everything on that car!)

2. Remove the trunk divider by first removing the rear trunk floor mat, four screws for the tin, then the wall covering with about 3 - 5 screws, then the access cover with about 10 -12 screws. (This is where a power screwdriver really comes in handy!) You can now remove the alternator and belt easily through the rear trunk while standing up. It also gives you a lot of light and leadway for anything else. Follow everyone else's suggestions on timing belt replacements... I left the BOTTOM cover off as it was too much hassle to reinstall. For a "view from the other side..." Remove the spare and 4 bolts holding the cover and mount in place. This gives you access to the distributor, oil filter and mechanical fuel pumps on carburated models.

3. As the x1/9 is a SPORTS car... it should be looked at that way... anyway else and its a bit more work. I daily drove mine a minimum of 54 miles roundtrip for over 100,000 miles. I have 148,000 on it now, bought it with 41,000. Its no HONDA for reliability, but it ain't no HYUNDAI either! I just replaced my fuel pump 'cause... it had a 148K on it. (Its a spare now) I have NEVER replaced a wheel bearing and its still running on its first engine, the head's never been off!

I love keeping it clean and ready for the "Sunday Drives" and n=ever bother with the top. I drive a 10 year old HONDA with 154,000 on it to work and back now (the wife has a '99 Accord, so there is no maintenance there...) and working on either of these cars is rather relaxed... as I have a spare. (It just took me 3 days to get a new clutch hose off the internet for the X, so I drove the Honda...)

Have fun!
