BWM help, please

X-ing in Canada
Hi so i've started the BWM/beam relay.
I've concluded the first part (New positive wire to steering column) and will provide ample pictures of that soon, but in the meantime I am stuck for the 2nd part : low beam relay mod.

I have installed the 2 relays ( i will use one for eventual fog lights, as my high beams are strong already), and have grounded them properly. Now I am lost:

1- Where is the mentionned wire harness? I see some cables going into the cabin, through the firewall, but I don't want to start unwrapping until I am sure I have the right bunch in my hand.

2- I bought relays that have these markings: 87, 87a, 30, 86, 85.
Now From what I understand 30 is from battery positive. 85 or 86 are ground, then I'm not sure... Please help!

knowing nothing about car electricity, I was able to manage the first mod with fair success. the alt needle used to hover just over the red when driving with headlights and radio. The clock was flashing along with the blinkers when turned on etc... NOW, the needle stays at a strong 3/4 of the way up and nothing flickers or fades! The cluster is brighter, and everything works much better! Thanks!

I'm suprised you had to do that mod on an 85, my 85 has never had any problems arise to where I would need the BWM. I guess it is just another example of every other one being different.

my low beams are like a bad G.I. Joe flashlight with dead batteries...
I can't wait to give them their own source!

edit: although I may have seen an improvement since the first mod

OEM headlights

Hi, no they are OEM headlights, but I did put in 2 relays. One was planned to take over the low beams and the other for an eventual set of fog lights.

I need help with the low beam relay mod, as I don't know where the wire harness is and I am not sure about the different poles on the relay

Just trying to help, next step may be to start checking all your connections for corrosion.

You need to consider that you've got a late model. The BWM is next to worthless for an 85. Opinions will vary on this point :)

The weak point is the silly junction in the fuse box. I recommend you replace it with a wire bus from a do-it-yourself outlet store (Home Depot, Lowe's). You can use a hack saw to cut it down to fewer positions and mount in directly where the old four spade connect was.

As far as improving your low beams... ditch the OEM lamps and pick up a cheap pair of Xeno's on Ebay. As JC above stated, a good cleaning of the connectors and you should be styling :)

Good luck with your mods!

I hope you shopped around on EBay. The ones I included in my post as an example are listed specifically for the X but any standard 7" set would of worked. I noticed the shipping on the ones I referenced was a bit steep.

Nope... I thought (wrongly, it seems!) that this was a package you had seen or bought before and that you suggested ahahah. that's ok. These kind of packages are not cheap here, and the total amounts to about 15% less on the web. Shipping was a true bastard, and is costing me 39u$ ... total 63.24$.

Can't wait to receive and install
