I was wondering if I'm better off sinking my limited funds into a new carb. or to do the work on the exhaust first. My feeling is that a K&N air filter and maybe a better carb would be the cheapest horsepower gain for the money. Gotta get the air in first and then work on getting it out.
I would be interested in your opinions as to which to do first and which is the most cost effective way to gain extra power.
Secondly I don't know much about carbs and would appreciate any suggestions as to what to use for a 78, 1300 cc engine. Anybody have one gathering dust?
Anyway your opinions are greatly valued and appreciated. Stu<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Stu,

The first thing I would do is to get a K&N (let me know if you need the part number, they can be hard to come by) and jet slightly richer.

I don't think you need a bigger carb yet. It just isn't the part that chokes you down.

Big Question: What kind of smog check do you have to pass? Visual or only sniff? Strict? Does you car have a catalytic converter? Do you need to keep it?

Exhaust mods aren't as easy and can be expensive.
The '74 4-into-2 supposedly is very efficient, but you would need a '74 exhaust (with the matching mounting hardware) or an aftermarket exhaust for this manifold ($$$).

A great mod is to install an 1100cc Yugo head. Much more compression. Coupled with an aftermarket cam, this is a great combination. You can get a reground SX-1 cam from PBS for $75 exchange.
The Yugo head may have to have the mounting holes enlarged a little (they came in 2 sizes) and doesn't have the holes for the air injection (at least mine doesn't).

I think you could build a great motor this way for very little money.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I had the opportunity to run my car on a dyno on friday and I discovered that it puts out all of 40 horses. No wonder it seems to lack power. I guess my first step is to rebuild the engine.

I live in the wilderness in B.C. and don't have any emissions checks that I have to pass so emissions are not an issue. My car has a sticker on the drivers door that says it is not cat. equipped. When I look under the engine I appear to have a converter. Can anybody tell me if a 78 came with a cat? Do they have a resonator as well as a muffler?

A yugo head? Interesting idea what kind of compression could I expect and am I looking at running higher octane gas with this?

If I got the modified cam so I have to change the valve springs to take advantage of it? The manual I have says my car has a weber 32 so changing the carb. probably doesn't make much sense like you suggested. I think I will play around with the jets to see what happens.

Thanks for the suggestions. Stu<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

a dyno measures hp at the wheel. A lot of hp is lost in the driveline, transmission, differential , CV joints etc. Since your car should have about 61 crankshaft hp, 40hp at the wheels doesn't sound so far off!
Don't go rushing into an engine rebuild. Fiat engines are stout.

I know some 77s had cats, mine didn't. I don't knwo about 78s. It should only have one muffler. If you see 2, one might be a cat.

An 1100 head should give 9.5 or 9.7:1 CR depending on who you ask. Yes, you would need higher octane gas, but it would be well worth it.

You don't need different springs with a hot cam.

How close to Vancouver do you live? Are you close to Seattle?

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Thanks for the info about the dyno. I'm glad that the engine isn't as bad as I thought it was. Looks like a new head may be the easiest and cheapest way to go. I would think that there should be lots of dead yugos in the scrap yards given their tin foil bodies.

I live between Vancouver and Whistler (on a really twisty paved road) about 1 hour north of Vancouver. If your ever up this way the beer is on me.

As far as the muffler, the exhaust comes out of the passenger side of the engine makes a 90 degree turn into what I think is the cat, through it makes a 180 degree turn into the muffler and then a 90 degree turn out the exhaust. From a flow point of view I don't think you could have a worse design. The muffler seems to be new so I was thinking of taking off the cat and just attaching the muffler directly. The problem may be mating the muffler to the manifold but I'll have to have a look at this. The cat doesn't seem to have an air injection pipe which is what makes me wonder if it is a cat, not to mention the no cat sticker on the car.
At this point I think I'll forget the carb fan, hook up the K&N and ditch the cat. Hopefully this should increase hp at the wheels.

If I go with a yugo head do I use a fiat or yugo head gasket?

Sounds like you have a cat exhaust. I am not familiar with an air injection pipe. My 83 didn't have one.

Exhaust pipe length is good for torque, so I would keep the exhaust as is and replace the cat with a "test pipe".
Supposedly the restrictive part is the exhaust manifold on your system, not really the exhaust system.

The Fiat and Yugo head gaskets are the same thing.

I'll drop by if I'm ever up that way!
