[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->The timing belt is pretty easy to change. Do you have a Haynes or Chilton manual? If so, just follow those directions.
The only thing that really helped me when I changed mine was after loosening the tensioner pulley, retighten the bolt. That should have put enough slack in the belt that you can pull it off. Then loosen the bolt again. You can see the way that the tensioner moves. Then you can move the base with your fingers back towards the trunk. With the base moved all the way back, tighten the bolt and your belt will now easily slip back on. Make sure that everything is set at top dead center and try not to move anything. Especially if you have a 1300 engine. The engine is close tolerance and if your off, the pistons will strike the valves which will reak havoc on the engine.

I suggest picking up a locking vice grips to hold the tensioner and a long screwdriver to pull it back.
$160 huh? The PO of my 83 paid $300, took about two weeks of bringing it back in, and the car ran so poorly the owner gave up sold it. Car came with all reciepts. 15 mins of readjustment after I towed it home, and now runs great.

As james and the C.Obert instructions show... it needs to point to #4 (or #2) to be set correctly.
I used WHITE OUT to mark all the timing marks on the cam, crank and aux pulleys... slipped on the new belt and tightened the tensioner.
Turned over the engine by HAND first to make sure clearances were OK... (Not needed on a 1500, but did it anyway...) and then ENSURED the marke were STILL lined up after a few revolutions! Then spun with starter with coil disconnected... and then lit it off!
USE LOTS OF LIGHT ALSO!

You will need a 17mm socket if you want to rotate the engine via the cam pulley. The tensioner is also 17mm I think. A 13mm open end wrench to loosen/tighten the Distributor hold down nut. A 10mm socket to remove/reattach the timing belt cover. I can't remember the size of the bolt to loosen the alternator, I think it's 17mm as well. A large screwdriver helps to pry the tensioner pulley to take the tension off of the belt.
I think that does it.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->The timing belt is pretty easy to change. Do you have a Haynes or Chilton manual? If so, just follow those directions.
The only thing that really helped me when I changed mine was after loosening the tensioner pulley, retighten the bolt. That should have put enough slack in the belt that you can pull it off. Then loosen the bolt again. You can see the way that the tensioner moves. Then you can move the base with your fingers back towards the trunk. With the base moved all the way back, tighten the bolt and your belt will now easily slip back on. Make sure that everything is set at top dead center and try not to move anything. Especially if you have a 1300 engine. The engine is close tolerance and if your off, the pistons will strike the valves which will reak havoc on the engine.

I suggest picking up a locking vice grips to hold the tensioner and a long screwdriver to pull it back.
$160 huh? The PO of my 83 paid $300, took about two weeks of bringing it back in, and the car ran so poorly the owner gave up sold it. Car came with all reciepts. 15 mins of readjustment after I towed it home, and now runs great.

As james and the C.Obert instructions show... it needs to point to #4 (or #2) to be set correctly.
I used WHITE OUT to mark all the timing marks on the cam, crank and aux pulleys... slipped on the new belt and tightened the tensioner.
Turned over the engine by HAND first to make sure clearances were OK... (Not needed on a 1500, but did it anyway...) and then ENSURED the marke were STILL lined up after a few revolutions! Then spun with starter with coil disconnected... and then lit it off!
USE LOTS OF LIGHT ALSO!

You will need a 17mm socket if you want to rotate the engine via the cam pulley. The tensioner is also 17mm I think. A 13mm open end wrench to loosen/tighten the Distributor hold down nut. A 10mm socket to remove/reattach the timing belt cover. I can't remember the size of the bolt to loosen the alternator, I think it's 17mm as well. A large screwdriver helps to pry the tensioner pulley to take the tension off of the belt.
I think that does it.

My cambelt still hasn't flown off yet so Mr Fiat (bless his heart) designed something that sure does work well on these engines.
