It looks like around a grand for a new one (rebuilt), so that'd be my upper limit. I don't know the exact year of the engine because it's not original and it's a 1.8litre, that's all I know (anyone know how to determine year?). For the same price I'd rather have pros do all the work because I don't wanna drop the tranny out and replace it because I have little time.
There's a groan from the transmission (input shaft bearing?) any time the clutch is engaged (i.e. pedal isn't pressed), in all gears (and neutral) except 4th. Where can I get it fixed as cheaply as possible?
I am plamming to sell the car after only driving it a few months, so a total rebuild isn't necessary probably, particularly since all shifting is smooth and the noise just seems to be bearing noise. I'm in Mercer Island. Thanks.
I am going to fix this transmission because I already have put too much into this car to make money out of it, so a little more lost will not make a difference. And I want to have a finished project, for a change.
Anyone know any good shops around here? Any magical fluids that fix bearings (he he)?<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

If you are trying to ID the year of the engine, I can help you narrow it down a bit. The 1.8 liter engines were used from 74-78 on the Spiders. The 74-76 engines had a double pulley on the front of the exhaust cam. The added pulley ran a smog air pump. The 77 and 78 engines had a single pulley as the air pump was eliminated. If you have one in the 74-76 range and the original carb is still on it, the 74 had a Weber 34DMSA and the 75-76 had a Weber 32ADFA carb. The only way to distinguish the 77 from the 78 and 75 from the 76 would be by the serial number on the block, as far as I know.
