I've narrowed it down to possibly fuel and i need advice for a starting point or next step:
1. did tune up; changed fuel filter; fuel pump seems to work consistently
2. each time i spray cold start fluid in the throat it starts
3. no problems when it is warm.

a. how do i clean out the carb without dismantling (already put fuel carb cleaner)
b. is it time for carb rebuild
c. other possilbe causes.

thanks compadres<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I think I'm correct in saying that your '79 X has a semi-automatic choke fed by the cooling system. If I'm right what you need to do is to enrich the mixture by rotating the choke housing relative to the carburettor itself (from memory turn the housing clockwise to increase the enrichment and anti-clockwise to reduce it). You should find some notches engraved into the housing on the upper edge. One on the fixed part of the housing and one of the rotatable part, when aligned the system should be "neutral" in terms of fine-tuning the mixture under choke.

If you've stripped the carb down and rebuilt it, the odds are that you've inadvertantly altered the setting without even knowing it.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I went through the choke; cleaned it out and got it working smoothly - adjusted it and the fuel mixture set screws. What i noticed differently was that a vaccuum advance arm was seized so I lubricated all the moveable areas in the carb - it starts! now just need to play around with the settings to get a good idle.
Hopefully i won't screw anything up; at the same time I am learning...<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
