The crankshaft pulley currently is pointing to the left of the 3 marks on the lower timing cover and when I put the cylinder head back on pistons number 1 and 4 were (about) as close to the top of their travel as could be eyeballed. The Haynes manual says to put the crankshaft mark on the RIGHT mark and the crankshaft will be 90 degrees from top dead center. Doc and Mac please don't flame me but if I move the crankshaft to the right mark (about 2 or 3 degrees) how can this be 90 degrees off TDC? That is the TDC mark. The most counterclockwise mark is 10 degrees BTDC. Now it is most important that when you put the head in place that the valves in the #4 cyl were completely closed and the valves in #1 are just barely each open!!! This means that the motor is firing on 4, and top of the exhaust stroke on 1. The cam mark would be lined up with the pointer at this time. If you have it backwards, no harm done, but you will have to adjust the firing order. If you put the head on without regard to the valve position, you may have already bent the valves without even turning it over. Hope this is not the case!! Whenever I install a head on a 1300, I always rotate the crankshaft 90 degrees from TDC (usually clockwise) before installing the head and camshaft. After verifying the cam timing, I turn the crank back to TDC. With the crank at 90 degrees from TDC, all of the pistons are at the middle of the bores, this makes it impossible to bend a valve if you were to get the cam on wrong.
