I jsut bought an '81X19 which appears to be good shape and will (hopefully) become great with some TLC. I am beginning the process of giving it the "once over" and anticipate asking many more questions. Here is the first.

I have not driven the car more than 70 miles or so and it had been in storage since 12/97. Living in California, I had to have the car "smogged" for registration. During the test (it passed), while the mechanic was running the engine in first, second, third, etc. gear (the car sits with its rear wheels on a recessed set of large rollers) I noticed that the cooling sysyem began to severly overflow. The reason why was obvious -- the fluid overflowing was dirty dirty orange (or rust-colored, if you will). In retrospect, this should not have suprised me. The car had been "non-op" for almost two years.

Now to that mundane question. I simply need to flush the cooling system and properly clean and refill. What are the measurements and most effective means of doing so? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

One final item. What are the best resources for restoring/servicing/reparing/maintaining the car.

Wait, one more. Again, not a surprise. Some minor rusting (blisters) in a few places at base of windshield. Products/methods to stop and prevent future damage?

This is what I did last week to flush my system and worked just fine.

1)Loose one of the radiator hoses this will drain the complete system in about 15 seconds (with the heater lever open)

2)reconnect and tight the hose, then add to the water bottle one can of "Prestone Radiator Flush", fill the system with water and BLEED ALL THE AIR CAREFULLY, otherwise it will definitely overheat. And drive with this thing on the system for about five hours (it took me about four days), THEN REPEAT STEP ONE

3) Fill up with fresh water AND BLEED AGAIN, then drive for a few days, THEN REPEAT STEP ONE.(This will flush all traces of the Prestone Flush from your system.

4) Fill with at least one gallon of anti freeze, then fill with water AND BLEED ALL AIR CAREFULLY (remember that when bleeding you must have the heater valve completely open)

With this system, and in light of the BOLD letters you used, I am uncertain whether bleeding all the air carefully is the same concept. Can you explain? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Chris & Gennie Obert (whose page that info comes from) are responsible for many many good Fiats still being on the road today.

Incidentally, our member Mark Plaia was a respected mechanic at their shop down in California for many years. Heck, I even bought the pistons and aux. shaft bearing for my '75 engine from them - good folks who give good advice IMHO. -Mac.
