I'm in the process of reassembling my engine and I'm confused about the crank pulley timing mark. The Fiat manual refers to a bolt-on timing indicator (which I have), while the Haynes manual refers to timing marks on the timing belt cover (my cover has no mark). Are the timing belt cover timing marks something specific to 1300cc X's, or is my car missing something it should have?

Next issue, the prominent crank pulley timing mark (2 parallel raised ridges perpendicular to the circumfrence of the pulley) is about _120_ degrees below TDC. There is also a little mark (barely more that a scratch) that lines up perfectly with 0 degrees TDC. It appears someone has made there own TDC mark on the crank pulley, since the real one is 120 degrees off. Since there is only one way to put on the crank pulley, how can the timing mark be off 120 degrees? (BTW the head is off the engine, so I know I'm at TDC).

And finally, on 4/25/01 Eric Armstrong posted something about a timing mark misprint with a link to corrected information. Think link is no longer valid. Has it been moved?

As for the timing mark being 120 degrees off, I suspect the motor has the wrong pulley. It may be a 1300 pulley.

For this very reason, I prefer to use the timing marks on the flywheel.

Using the previously made timing "scratch" on the crank pulley at 0 TDC, and with the the head off and the clyinders at TDC I bolted the tranney back on and added a timing mark to flywheel.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->On the 1500, the timing mark is on the left side of the engine mount, right by the water pump. You should have a metal pointer on that side that will line up with the mark on the crank pully. If indeed it is off about 120 degrees, I would then suspect that your crank pully is from a 1300 engine and not a 1500 engine. The timing marks are about 120 degrees different, as I found out on my cam which is indexed for both applications. To be sure, check your flywheel and see where it is as well.

I personally don't like the flywheel because of having to try and get a good reading with the darn timing gun.

The other article that I wrote was specific to a 1300 engine, so it wouldn't have helped.
