On a recent undercar inspection of my 81 X I noticed a large gash in the drivers side outer CV joint boot, which I replaced only a year and a half ago (the other 3 presumably 19-year-old boots are just fine). As I prepare to redo this repair a couple of questions come to mind:
1. I've seen the split-type generic CV joint boots in auto parts stores (which don't require removing the CV joint from the hub to install) - anyone know if any brand/size fits an X and if so are they an acceptable substitute for the stock boot?
2. The first time I did this I followed the advice in the shop manual and replaced the 6 Allen bolts. Since then I read somewhere of folks reusing the original bolts with Loctite. Anybody have any experience with this, and is there a particular color/grade of Loctite that is best to use?
Any advice appreciated!

only the slip on style CV boots work here
the six allen bolts should be very tight
red locktite works well and there is a locktite that works with pre assembled fasteners
