Engine hesitation- Mechanical fuel pump issue? 1500 engine

If you can get the rear of the car up a bit, it is pretty easy to remove the tank. There are two straps holding it in. Just disconnect the filler hose, and wires and hoses at the sender first. At some point you will want to remove the sender so you might want to put something on those rusty studs to facilitate removing the nuts. It is very hard to see much inside the tank without the sender removed.
Regarding the 'straps' holding the tank in place - are they made of a material which degrades over time, i.e. are they likely to disintegrate when removing the tank? And is so, are they easily replaced....
For our '74's, these guys? They look pretty indestructible:

Mine were made of steel and were in pretty good shape. When the tank comes out, there is also some insulation that comes out as well as a press board panel between the tank and the driver side sheet metal. I've heard that you need to be very careful with the studs that hold the sender on the tank. Apparently they can snap off if torqued too much. Mine came off easily and I made sure not to over tighten them when I put it back together.

Are you still using a mechanical pump or the electric one you used to pump the tank out?

EDIT: Did this ever get resolved?
