No idea about a "correct" answer to your question... I am pretty new to the X1/9. I did learn something that may be of you to you as I installed my speedo cable (see earlier thread). The instrument panel in the dash is REALLY easy to take out... simply undo the 5 allen head screws that hold the dash in, and slip it out! You won't have much room to work with, but it should be enough to take out the offending lightbulb (also very easy - a half twist and it pops out into your hand!)

The reset button is located inside the center console.
You have to reach from the pasenger side sticking your head (as much as you can)towards the back of the car (inside of the console)
(As a matter of fact, if you have a rivet gun I strongly recomend you to remove at least one small rivet from the console to have a little more access, thereafter you will have to replace the rivet.)
I side the console there is a metalic box about 3"X 3" X 2".
On the back of this box you will have two screws with safety wire, remove the safety wire and the screws, then you insert a small screwdriver trough the hole(s)and you will be pushing a contact inside the metal box, this resets the Lambda sensor light.
