I was wrong in assuming all colors on later cars were clear coats. Looking at the Dupont Historical Paint site for FIATs in the 1985-1988 time frame, some colors were and some not. As a rule, if the paint name has "metallic" in it, the indicator dot is next to it to denote a "two-coat color" which means base coat/clear coat. For example, there's a 601 Nero Profundo that's not a clear coat, and a 602 Nero Metallic that is a clear coat. Does you car still have the paint label on the underside of the decklid? If so, the paint code number would help "clear" this upI have seen no evidence of any repainting. Perhaps the clear coat has completely flaked/worn off. There is some clear coat still on the rear spoiler but most of that has flaked off.
Were the solid colors actually clear coated?
Looks identical to mine when I got it (just not as rusty )- definitely no clear coat - it was the same single stage red used for late 80's - 90's Volvo 240, 700 & 850 models (Volvo 601 red). Since I cut up my trunk lid, can you tell me what the paint code actually is when you get back to it?
It just dawned on my that you used to have side trims. What kind of shape are they in? Mine are cooked on the surfaces the sun could reach. Any chance these are available for sale? Many thanks.
Hi Karl - I sold the trim years ago, sorry.
What usually works to treat faded plastic trim is a carefully applied heat gun. Example on the bumper trim on an old 850 of mine
Excellent! I thought someone had mentioned a good alternative. I figure in the trunk and other minor areas a close substitute would serve well and not require me to get some mixed paint.Rustoleum Sunrise Red is a shockingly close match to 866.
