Brandon,
Fiats really are very reliable. After a while.

The key is to drive it all the time. If you buy a car that hasn't been driven much, it won't be reliable at first. Keep driving it, break down a couple of times, fix everything that is wrong with it, keep driving it and all of a sudden you have a reliable car.

My car has turned out to be super reliable, even with a souped up motor. I drive it down to Portland, thrash it around PIR racetrack at full tilt for 100 miles, put the street tires back on and drive back home to Seattle. I don't even consider the possibility of breaking down any more.

You fix it once, not again, unless your name is Tony.

Of course to be able to do this, you need to be able to work on it yourself unless you have more money than the average young Fiat owner. Parts are cheap.

Did I mention that you need to keep driving it?
My buddy who only drives his in the summer has installed 5 clutch slave cylinders in 8 years or something like that. Every time he doesn't drive it for an extended period, something else breaks.

But if you want a car that you can buy cheap and then forget about it and just drive it without EVER working on it, I can recommend an early Honda Civic.

My X1/9 has 148K on the same engine, is 21 years old, not treated very well, and has TOTALLED a 1987 Honda 4 Door Accord.

I now fool with it alot as it is a SPORTS car and I no longer use it as my daily driver to work and back...

See it at:

http://www.x1-9ownersclub.org.uk/survey/results/1142.html

I now have FUN keeping it pretty and runnin' its wheels off. I never put on the top, the rear window is gone... along with alot of other things...

I drive a 1990 Civic to work and my wife drives a 1999 Accord. I spend more in payments in two months on my wife's car than I put into the aesthetic restoration of the FIAT.

Listen to your old man and buy a good used Honda for transportation... Listen to Ulix and buy a good used X1/9 for FUN!

If you can fix a FIAT... you can fix anything... and the folks here on this web will help ya.

You have my "name" on it!

Tony... Fixin' It Again!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I'm in agreement on this one. I don't drive my Xs during the winter (and yes every spring I am fixing electrical bugs for letting the car sit for months) but it is also true that the cars can be extremely reliable! I have been running my '80 X1/9 all over the Northwest this summer with no troubles (other than my cold start valve, which makes her a little cranky to start in very hot weather, but it's an easy fix and has never stranded me anyway) - and don't even get me started about having driven my '75 X across the United States! Wheee!
happy.gif

They are great. However, the truest things said in this conversation are that if you buy a cheap one that needs, it will be a lot of work to bring it up to a reliable condition. Spend more upfront and find one that is already in good shape, it's worth it, you'll end up spending far more trying to bring a beater X back to reliability. There is no "common rule" with these cars, it's ALL about how each individual vehicle has been treated & maintained, so be thorough in your search (read some of this forum's archives for great tips on what to look for in an X)...

Finally, if you are on a tight budget and looking for something dirt cheap to run on little-to-no maintenance, you really would be better off buying a cheap old beater Honda!

I have 2 X1/9s, and 2 old beater Hondas!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Tony is right - X1/9's are great sports cars, and Hondas are great transportation machines (and more fun to drive than many would admit).

I'm on my second X1/9, both bought as fairly low milage cars in excellent condition. Even so, in each case I spent some money to fix things the previous owners didn't. Especially, plan on replacing the timing belt unless you KNOW it has been done recently. They last about 25K - 30K miles.

Fiats don't thrive on neglect - either in maintenance or driving. Take good care of it, drive it regularly, and it will be as reliable as any other older sports car.

One last thing - if you live where it snows, don't drive it in the winter. Rust is THE major problem with these cars, and road salt is the kiss of death.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Brandon...

I read the whole thread, and wanted to add my .02

I've had my '83 for almost 2 years, and the only "real" problem I have had happened just after buying the car - the Air Flow Meter died... most likely becuase the car had been sitting for so long before I bought it. Other than that, there has been nothing that kept me off the road for more than a few days (other than the timing belt, but that one we can blame on me, not the car).

I love my car, it has been great! I have put almost 10,000 miles on it, with minimal "necessary" expense.

Now, all of that being said, would I recommend that you own an X1/9 as your primary car? No way! Why? It has nothing at all to do with being a Fiat/Bertone, but rather that the absolute newest of these cars is what - 13 years old now? It's a car that was never widely sold, so while Ulix is right in pointing out that parts are reasonably cheap, and we have a number of specialty vendors who service all of our parts needs, it isn't the kind of thing you can walk in to NAPA, Pep Boys, or whatever the automotive chain store is where you happen to live and buy parts - trust me, I've tried!
happy.gif

In short, buy one, enjoy the experience of owning and driving a unique and wonderful car, but don't rely on it as your sole car.

just my .02

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->i agree with all that was said here:

1. ya gotta drive these things
2. parts are cheap and (usually) not too hard to find
3. you really need to be prepared to work on them yourself (or have a good, patient mechanic)
4. it is better to spend a little more on a "good" one than to try to restore a cheap one
5. maybe they are not suited as a daily driver

unfortunately, i do not practice what i preach, regarding 4 & 5.

i've daily driven fiats for the last 15 years
(mostly spiders). and i generally never paid more than a $1000 for them. i've had between 25 and 30 fiats/lancias.

and until just recently (the last two years or so) i've never needed a tow home, or needed to borrow the wife's car (in fact she drove spiders, too).

i don't know if it is because i am older, with two kids, or what...
but it has been much harder to keep my fiats
100% reliable.

they are no worse than any other car,
but c'mon, we're talking about 15, 20, 25 year old cars.

i still refuse to buy a new car.

i enjoy the "control" i have over the cars that
i know how to fix.
but this comes at a price.
mostly your time and commitment.

for a "young-guy" or one with a very understanding wife (like mine), it can be a GREAT hobby.

you will learn a LOT.
especially if you daily drive it.
it becomes a necessity..

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I just want to say that the matter of how you use the car is really up to what you want out of it.

I have a collection of Xs, but only one of them is for the road and it constitutes my main car, while my Honda is only used for special occasions (or when I really, badly need a serious bit of driving).

The fiat is incredibly reliable given the condition it's in. Rather than keep fixing it I came to the conclusion that it would be simpler, cheaper just to let it go, but the thing just keeps on running (if you forget the three blown head gaskets and a burst water hose). All of the problems I've ever had with the car have been entirely self inflicted (like revving it up too far, running it without any coolant, etc). Basically if I drove it like a "normal" car, chances are that it would last pretty much forever (except for the slowly growing holes).

Now I can hear all you people screaming over such sacriledge, but I simply can't afford to keep the car in perfect condition, and my race car has to be kept in perfect condition. However I don't think I could last too long without having an X to drive around on a regular basis - it is just far too enjoyable. Solution buy one in reasonable nick and don't abuse it too much. Of course, once this one dies I have a selection to fall back on....<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Test drive one if you can, that will be the deciding factor. If an X1/9 is right for you, at some point you will be buying one and won't mind the upkeep. If not, you'll know that you'll be happy with a "everyone has one, drive it till the factory oil congeals" Honda or Toyota.

I caught the bug for an X1/9 back in high school, but only recently did I go out and find one (midlife crisis approaching I guess). The work I've done on it is repaid on every curve I take a bit fast and every shift I delay a bit too long. It really gets my blood moving hugging the turns and winding out the motor, all the while knowing if/when I pass another that we'll notice each other. Yes, you can get more power and higher revs out of a new Japanese engine but when was the last time you said "What is that car? A Honda? Wow, you don't see many of those!"
happy.gif

Another member on this list has owned his '74 since high school and is right now restoring it and putting in a hotter engine. I'll bet he's owned a Honda or Toyota sometime in his life and not once thought about hanging onto it long-term.

In other words, it's a commitment. Yes, it will take more work on your part than most Japanese cars - they really have gotten reliability down to a science. Whether or not that extra work is acceptable to you will be decided the first time you drive one. At that very moment you'll either lose any need to look at another X1/9, or the bug will be caught and you will own one before you die...

Ultimately, I'm not convinced that it is about the X1/9 per se, but rather that we have the urge to be different in our blood! I look at the list of cars I have owned over the years... all were acquired cheaply (less than $1000 with the exception of my currently daily driver), and it reads like a who's who list of the kinds of cars most people shy away from... Audi, Peugeot, Maserati, Bertone... add the stuff that's more than 50 years old and the list looks downright odd!

I suppose it is a bit like a relationship with another person - if you don't fight every so often, and then make up, how do you know that you are truly in love?

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I guess I feel its appropriate that I chime in here. I'm fairly young (23), and bought my spider a few years ago. The car needed a lot of work, but it ran ok and was the coolest looking convertable that I was going to get for $2G's. Part after part broke and I had to replace them all. I have redone the body, replaced the entire suspension, built and installed a hopped up engine and more. I learned nearly everything I know about cars from hands on experience. I am a certifiable car freak now.

Is this a good thing? Not if you like money, because you won't want to stop tweaking once you start. The car will obsess you. You too will become a car person. But its ok if you like to meet really nice people, like to drive, and like a car that isn't just transporation, but rather art.

When you get a Fiat, its not just buying a car, its subscribing to a wonderful community with some of the coolest people that you will ever meet. Maybe you don't have time/interest for that, and thats ok. Get a car that doesn't require archaic knowledge and regular maintenence. Get a car that is easy to maintain and gets you zero looks from chicks. Get a car that you can't/wouldn't race. But the car will just be a car if you do that.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Wowsuh, some real poets in the group. I can't explain the kizmet of an X any better than what is already posted.

Personally, I came into the X world in a different way. After many years of racing a big thumping musclecar ('69 Camaro SS), the expense was getting to be a bit much. All I wanted was a racecar that didn't cost so much to campaign, so bought a dead raceX1/9. Then a funny thing happened...the raceX is alot of fun, but not street legal, so I felt like I was missing the rest of the X-perience. So I bought a streetX and have been loving it ever since. My musclecar friends think I'm abit looney for ignoring the Camaro in favor of the Xs, but the charm of the X is that strong.

As for reliablity, there will be issues to deal with in any make. I've owned a dozen makes over the years, and none were appreciably better or worse. (OK, the TR7 was a gen-u-wine POS.) Like the saying goes, if something has boobs or bumpers, there will be problems.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->After reading this thread and all of the others over the past 3 weeks, I just had to chime in. Every post at this site conveys a love for the X1/9 that is almost like folks bragging about their kids, and I can relate 100%. The X1/9 has personality beyond anything you'll ever own and all the cars are intrinsically female. They can be temperamental pretty often, but when she is in a good mood and you are on a twisting mountain road, you won't find anything more exhilarating. Life is good. Just keep your cassettes and CDs strapped down because they'll be glued to the door panels from the G's you can pull effortlessly in the curves.

I stumbled onto this site recently while looking for a used X to buy. Then I found the "twin" to my 1980 X1/9 that I had in college and have been literally obsessed ever since -- problem is the owner can't sell it until December (!@#*!!). I have been checking in on this site almost daily because, obviously, you guys are as hooked as me.

I've owned a smorgasbord of cars (an MGB, the X, 2 Honda Accords, a Toyota 4x4, a Laser, Nissan Stanza, a Grand Caravan (now there's a lesson in unreliability), and now a 4x4 Explorer to tow the boat, but I'm going to get another X in order to have fun again. As far as the mechanical issues, the Hondas are hard to beat and I could have been certified as a master Fiat mechanic in 1983. However, my recommendation is to buy the X, get a repair manual, and enjoy the feeling (and looks) you'll get in this baby Ferrari.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The sheer driving pleasure that is derived from punting the X around a corner well in excess of a "sensible" speed, cannot be matched by a quieter, comfortable, "reliable" (read boring) conventional sedan.
Common sense and popular opinion says that we should all drive Japanese bread boxes. But theres more to life and living it to the full than conforming to the norm. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->
