[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Rob,

It sounds like you have done this swap a couple of times now. When you do it again, it would be great if you could take some good pictures of some of the steps, how the engine sits in the car, what to do about engine mounts, which transaxle you use, which driveshafts, where the turbo (and intercooler?) sit, how you do the plumbing, etc.

Something like this site:
http://www.feesch.com/x1-9/uno.htm
and
http://www.feesch.com/x1-9/facts.htm

This would be very interesting and highly informative for many people on the web.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I took the opportunity to tour your site. I wish I understood the reasoning for the required "membership" if it cost nothing. Why must I register to see the "members only" area?

I have seen a number of engine swaps for the X1/9. Wayne's V6, 124 Twincams, air cooled VWs and a couple of others. I guess I am something of a purist, but I have always thought that the engine was one of the things that made the X1/9 a great car. I have a couple of satisfyingly fast X1/9s and wouldn't dream of taking out the soul of the car in persuit of more power. The SOHC motor is a very sweet engine and is capable of making the car plently fast. To change the engine would completely change the character of the car.

I am sure the 2.2 turbo swap results in a fast X, I just don't think I want to drive an X with the soul of a K car.

I, by the way, used to own a K-car. That engine refused to die (except for MAP sensors which it ate like $80 candies) and it did last a reeeally long time even through the abuses I gave. Even still, I think I would ultimately have to agree with Steve. What I typically believe is that if one is going to do a swap, they should at least be using another Fiat Group product's engine (Of course all of that went out the window when I saw Wayne's car). I guess ultimately it is just a matter of personal opinion. -Mac.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Naturally opinions will vary, but in my case it is really quite simple. The X1/9 may not have come with the most powerful engines in the world (or even Italy!) but the X1/9 SOHC engines, to me, make the most beautiful sound at speed - moreso than just about any other car I could think of... except maybe for a nice Lambo or Ferrari engine, also Italians, but they don't count to me because I have no interest in owning those... Or to put it another way: Of all the cars which I could actually own on a budget, the X1/9 has the most beautiful sounding engine I've ever heard. I don't even have stereos - in either of my X1/9s - just so I will have no distractions from the sweet song of the SOHC at redline `:)

The 1500cc is *slightly* less of an opera star in stock form. More torque, more power perhaps, and both engines do sound like a 4-cylinder wet dream, but the 1300cc is just an absolute joy to listen to while you blast down a twisty backroad at high rpm... there is just nothing else like it.

So that's why I love the Fiat SOHC engines. Plus, anyone who is competent in a garage can tweak these engines to really perform competetively. What more proof could we need than to look at how well X1/9s are doing (and have always done) in the SCCA autocrosses? Several National Championships have been won by Xs over the years. Just ask Steve Hoelscher if an X1/9 is competetive - he's won the DSP National Championship in his X1/9 2 years in a row!

Maybe tom@hotmail (see next thread up the page) has had a bad time with his X. So he was not thorough and bought a crapper X that was not maintained well, or he's frustrated with his inability to just turn a key & win??

I dunno, but I would be happy to relieve him of such a burdensome automobile! ;)

Let's get it into the hands of someone who knows how to make it win.

No offense to any of the engine-swappers out there, because I have seen and heard of many engine swaps into these cars which are really cool. But if one's only reason to hack the car up is because they think the stock X1/9 engines have no potential, that person has clearly not done any homework in my humble opinion! -Mac.

Consider the great sporting cars of all time. The one thing they all had in common, a great engine. Perhaps not the most powerful, but a great engine none the less.

Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Porsche, all build cars that are forever identified by their combination of chassis and engine. When Porsche dared to build water cooled, in-line engines, their customers were slow to acknowledge them as Porsches. That despite the fact that a front engine, water cooled Porsche was arguably a better car than the old 911.

There were many attempts over the years to build rivals to Ferrari. Iso, Bizzarrini, De Tomaso, all built sporting cars with fine Italian coachwork and chassis. But the soul of a Corvette? Small block Chevys and Fords left customers wanting. This despite the cars being just as fast and more reliable (and cheaper to maintain) than their pettagreed rivals.

Fiat's SOHC is one of the sweetest 4 cylinder engines I have ever driven, and I have driven most of the best. In 1290 cc (1300 X1/9) form it delivers the most satifying of sensory input. Its liquid smooth feel and tenor wail are without equal.

Driving my '74 you will find the experience dominated by the engine. The sound, feel and feedback is ever present in everything about driving it. Every stopsign is another opportunity to run it through the gears and enjoy the sound and fury. It is as if the car is constantly poking you in the ribs and saying; "go fast...go fast...go fast..." It is ALWAYS eager to respond to the whip.

Not long ago a friend of mine was riding with me in my '74. We were motoring along in traffic. He (owner of an Acura Integra) commented on how the engine rev'ed and sounded. (in traffic I normally shift the car at about 6500 rpm) Once clear of the traffic I ran it up to the normal shift point (in 2nd gear) and then planted my foot, running the tach off the scale (well past the 8000 rpm mark). His jaw dropped. I couldn't help but laugh at him.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I had a similar experience with my buddy the 5.0 Mustang guy. We went to lunch one day and he made cracks about how he was going to have to be seen in a POS Fiat (he was just joking around). Getting on the freeway I went from second to fourth gear shifting at 7500rpm, this includes doing 70 mph on the on-ramp that he normally takes at 50mph thinking he's going fast.

His jaw dropped, too. Not only because he realized that if he were behind me in his 'stang he would have been embarassed by a POS Fiat, but also because he had never seen an engine rev that high so willingly and had never heard such beautiful music coming from an engine.

Needless to say the wisecracks stopped there...

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Well that post certainly got a response.....

I'll just put in my two-bits as well then....

I have driven a wide range of so called performance cars and every single one of them has been 'faster' than my beloved X1/9, even my old clapped out '79 Escort was faster (when it worked), but none of them have tempted me back to them.

Until about three months ago all I ever drove was my X (with the exception of when I melted the head) and the only reason I'm not driving it everyday is that the 2000 miles a month I was racking up in it were literally killing it. Ironically it is currently racking up nearly double that in the hands of my father who is looking after it over the winter.

The irony here is that the car I currently drive is a '98 Honda (Acura to you lot) Integra, and the only reason I bought it was because of the amazing similarity in driving experience it offered to the X1/9 (despite the jap engineered FWD) and the key is the wonderful rev-range (so desperately flawed by the annoying 9.5k rev-limit). But I look forward still to the occasions when I can get in my X and have some fun. The first ten minutes are always infuriating owing to the fact that I don't have 200bhp on tap, but after that I couldn't care - I'm having too much fun and enjoying the playfulness of that wonderful sohc engine and pity any poor sod who tries to race me. I suspect that the Integra would win, but it needs a billiard table-smooth surface to really show off, whereas the X just chews up the hopeless British roads. When I got the chance to go racing, I had no doubts as to what car I would use - but therein lies a different affair as the X is sadly lacking in production form (in this country the very concept of autocross seems a bit bizarre - plus the MSA would never allow it!) so I have to take the modified route and then I need to sort myself out with some more serious power which brings me back to the dilemna of engines.

Tempted as I may be to use my 2L twink, it is simply too heavy and requires modifications to the engine bay that require specific approval from the MSA, a newer 1600 16v Brava engine is available to me, but is largely an unknown in terms of transplanting, or I could just go mad with the engine I already have. I keep the advantage of weight over the other engines, not to mention the rev-happy antics that we all love. The down side is that there is basically nothing left of the X tuning scene in this country. With just 5 or maybe 6 X competitors in the country there simply isn't a market - so I have to get everything done through bespoke engineering (expensive)......

Sorry - I'm getting a bit off course here, back to the plot

I must admit that I don't think that the engine is the soul of the car (controversy), the X is a truly sublime package. The handling (once you dump the typically soggy springs and dampers) is enough to make your head spin (and was enough to stop me buying one of the new Coupe turbos which are somewhat lacking in that department), the balance of the steering and the brakes really are inspirational (again once sorted). IMHO I think it is the genius of the engineers who designed the car who should claim credit for the soul and we should all forgive them for the collection of minor flaws that seem to put most people off!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I admit it... I'm swapping engines in my X for a Fiat 1995cc twincam and using a Scorpion transmission.

Actually, it was already swapped before I bought and the previous owner then swiped the motor for his Scorpion, so technically I'm just installing what he removed?

Anyway, my reasons for swapping are simple:

1) I only want to stock twincam parts since all my other cars are twincams.

2) I want more than 150 hp in a street motor and am targeting 175 hp.

3) With a hot twincam's torque, I want a reliable transmission -- which makes the Scorpion tranny a natural.

Without goals #1 & #3, then a turboed singlecam makes a fair amount of sense as it won't have the bottom-end torque to play havoc in the transmission.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->The 1300cc engine is very dear to me because of it's short stroke of 55.5mm. With an 86mm bore, that is a ratio of 1.55. I liked the analogy used by PBS, if you built a "square" 1300cc engine with bore and strok of 55.5mm, you would end up with a 10 cylinder engine!

The Honda Vtec engines spoil the fun a little because 8000rpm doesn't sound as impressive anymore as it did a couple of years ago (let alone 25 years ago.)

I don't kid myself - my "built" 1300 will never make my X1/9 a truly fast car. But I have definitely increased the fun factor and have enough power to put the suspension to work in the twisties...

...that the X1/9 was penned by Gandini and powered by Lampredi. Ever thought of just how exclusive that combination is?

Something I should have mentioned earlier. I have always liked tiny little, high winding engines, in nimble little cars. (Sort of the inverse of a Cobra) I very much like the challenge of driving such a car. It requires much more of the driver than a powerful engine, that only requires you to stomp on the throttle to go fast.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I understand not wanting to change the motor simply for more power. The X that I'm getting tonight doesn't have a motor so rather than fighting the usual silliness to get one, I figured I'd use what I've got around.

I have a spare 2.2 turbo out of an Omni GLH (Goes Like Hell) Turbo. The motor in stock form puts out 146hp at 9psi. Built properly, it will put out nearly 450hp. I've owned a number of cars with these motors and they are wonderful motors. The 16-valve turbos rev straight to 6000 RPM, producing wonderful noises, 14psi of boost and 224hp, before the factory cut off takes away the song and your fun, but you grab the next gear and the fun resumes...

Now, this motor will be Italian, because I will be putting a 16-valve Maserati TC head on my block. Chrysler asked Maserati to build them a flagship convertible to compete with Cadillac's Allante. Maserati did, using the venerable Lebaron Convertible as it's basis. The result? An ugly Lebaron convertible with an absolutely wonderful motor, the 16-valve, DOHC, intercooled turbo 2.2L by Maserati. In testing, on the dyno, they produced over 400hp with very little tuning. On the street it was detuned to 200hp since the transaxles would never survive the warranty period.

So there you have it, an american block with an Italian (Red) head and a whole lot of fun!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
