There is of course a second problem.....
This car has NEVER been registered for road use. It has never had a registration number which presents me with a rather nasty obstacle if I were to convert it to road use. Effectively it is a new car - which means it has to meet the same emissions controls as any other new car must meet. Ie. unleaded only and running a catalytic converter. It also has to meet all of the safety requirements, but I think that is already done as it is done by model rather than individual car registration - either way it would be a nightmare to try and get a registration number for it.
In it's current form it is a class leading hill climber, and I've no doubt I can turn it into a class leading circuit racer as well (just as soon as I get my 230+bhp turbo motor installed.........)
With a little bit of luck I will make the first race of the season at Donnington on March 25th and then we'll see just how good the car is (or how bad the driver is....)<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

With just 8 weeks to go until the start of the Auto Italia season it is probably going to be doing the rounds between various workshops in an attempt to get everything ready in time.
I count 6 jobs left to do:
1. fix the new seat in (the original doesn't carry an FIA certificate - so I can't use it!)
2. finish plumbing the fire extinguisher system in (it's actually the release cables that need fixing in)
3. rig up a brake light system
4. rig up front and tail lights
5. fit an oil catch tank (compulsary for championship)

Originally it was from a 1500, but the plastic had split and was peeling from the metal carcass - so I stripped all the foam off and took it back to the bare metal and then cut off all the bits I didn't need (everything except the frame directly infront of my seat) - so I'm left with the bare chassis member on the passenger side. I have to line it with something to hide the rivets and sharp edges, but it looks much more "raw" (and weighs a couple of pounds less). Where the stereo and heater controls used to live there is now just a metal panel with my main electrical controls (power, auxillary and starter). The dashboard is still original, but I'm trying to save my pennies up for a nice Stack dash with all the necessary software loaded in. This should bring the weight of the dashboard down to almost nothing (the square plastic frame on the 1500's is unbelievably heavy for what it is!)<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

That's gotta go. I was looking at some pictures of the Lancia 037 street cars and noticed that they had a thin carpet on the floor with bare metal underneath. Also intersting was that they cut out two square patches where driver and passenger's feet go, sort of like floor mats. I may put something down under the heal area though to improve grip. Painful experience with my Honda has tought me that nice polished alloy pedals may look fantastic - but they don't do much for grip when you're wearing race boots. I haven't tried race boots on this car yet, but I imagine I will find the same problem.
On the complete opposite note however, I inspected the car on Saturday and discovered that one of my front wets is next to useless thanks to a leaky rim seal and a collapsed sidewall! It looks like I'll have to dig out some cash for a pair of new front wets (if I can find someone to supply them) as my first race in March is most likely to be closer to a swimming contest than a circuit race!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

This will certainly do me for the start of my racing career in this car, but I plan to have my Uno Turbo engine tuned and fitted which will require a few extra dials, such as oil temperature and boost pressure, to be added.
I'm hoping that my salary bonus this year is enough to cover the purchase of a fancy Stack dashboard AND the necessary modifications to the engine. If I can pull that off it should mark the end of all my gauge requirements for the foreseeable future since the dash is fully programmable so it can display pretty much anything I want (short of a widescreen movie!). There is of course a second problem.....
This car has NEVER been registered for road use. It has never had a registration number which presents me with a rather nasty obstacle if I were to convert it to road use. Effectively it is a new car - which means it has to meet the same emissions controls as any other new car must meet. Ie. unleaded only and running a catalytic converter. It also has to meet all of the safety requirements, but I think that is already done as it is done by model rather than individual car registration - either way it would be a nightmare to try and get a registration number for it.
In it's current form it is a class leading hill climber, and I've no doubt I can turn it into a class leading circuit racer as well (just as soon as I get my 230+bhp turbo motor installed.........)
With a little bit of luck I will make the first race of the season at Donnington on March 25th and then we'll see just how good the car is (or how bad the driver is....)<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

With just 8 weeks to go until the start of the Auto Italia season it is probably going to be doing the rounds between various workshops in an attempt to get everything ready in time.
I count 6 jobs left to do:
1. fix the new seat in (the original doesn't carry an FIA certificate - so I can't use it!)
2. finish plumbing the fire extinguisher system in (it's actually the release cables that need fixing in)
3. rig up a brake light system
4. rig up front and tail lights
5. fit an oil catch tank (compulsary for championship)
6. get the whole thing tuned up on a rolling road!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Originally it was from a 1500, but the plastic had split and was peeling from the metal carcass - so I stripped all the foam off and took it back to the bare metal and then cut off all the bits I didn't need (everything except the frame directly infront of my seat) - so I'm left with the bare chassis member on the passenger side. I have to line it with something to hide the rivets and sharp edges, but it looks much more "raw" (and weighs a couple of pounds less). Where the stereo and heater controls used to live there is now just a metal panel with my main electrical controls (power, auxillary and starter). The dashboard is still original, but I'm trying to save my pennies up for a nice Stack dash with all the necessary software loaded in. This should bring the weight of the dashboard down to almost nothing (the square plastic frame on the 1500's is unbelievably heavy for what it is!)<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

That's gotta go. I was looking at some pictures of the Lancia 037 street cars and noticed that they had a thin carpet on the floor with bare metal underneath. Also intersting was that they cut out two square patches where driver and passenger's feet go, sort of like floor mats. I may put something down under the heal area though to improve grip. Painful experience with my Honda has tought me that nice polished alloy pedals may look fantastic - but they don't do much for grip when you're wearing race boots. I haven't tried race boots on this car yet, but I imagine I will find the same problem.
On the complete opposite note however, I inspected the car on Saturday and discovered that one of my front wets is next to useless thanks to a leaky rim seal and a collapsed sidewall! It looks like I'll have to dig out some cash for a pair of new front wets (if I can find someone to supply them) as my first race in March is most likely to be closer to a swimming contest than a circuit race!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

This will certainly do me for the start of my racing career in this car, but I plan to have my Uno Turbo engine tuned and fitted which will require a few extra dials, such as oil temperature and boost pressure, to be added.
I'm hoping that my salary bonus this year is enough to cover the purchase of a fancy Stack dashboard AND the necessary modifications to the engine. If I can pull that off it should mark the end of all my gauge requirements for the foreseeable future since the dash is fully programmable so it can display pretty much anything I want (short of a widescreen movie!). Unfortunately a the painful end of about £1000 ($1500 US) I may just be daydreaming......<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
