On the weekend I cut the breather hose that goes from the top of the fuel tank to the inlet on the carb. (beside the fuel needle valve) and put in a gas filter to see if the dirt was getting in this way. I noticed that the new gas filter is full of gas which I am not sure is normal. Can anybody tell me if this should be full of gas or air?

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I'm confused. Are you referring to the fuel filter. I now have two fuel filters one on the gas line (from the fuel pump to the carb) replacing this one didn't stop the dirt from getting into the carb. And another(new) on what I think is the fuel breather tube, the one from the top of the gas tank to the carb. This joins into the carb. next to the hose from the fuel pump. I thought that this tube takes fumes from the carb. bowl. Am I correct in assuming that this also vents excess fuel back into the tank and thats why it is full of fuel? [FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I believe what you are referring to is the fuel return line. These were added to reduce vapor lock.

These should have gas flowing from the carb to the tank under *normal* conditions. The line is smaller than the supply line and the idea is that the 'excess' fuel that the carb can't take will bleed back to the tank.

No idea why you have stuff in it unless your hoses are real old and the rubber is deteriorating (sp?).

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Thanks for unconfusing me about the fuel return line. For the past several weeks the engine has been loosing power and eventually it dies. I had been finding dirt in the carb. which I think must have come from the fuel return hose since the filter has eliminated the dirt in the carb. I have discovered that if I remove the emulsion tubes I can stick a plastic tube into the carb bowl (down the tube hole) and suck out the gas and dirt. After doing this it would run fine for about 200km and then loose power and die. When it looses power I can keep it running with the throttle full open so I thought that the dirt was plugging the low speed jets but that it would run on the secondaries. Now I'm not getting dirt but it is still dying. It is almost as though the fuel level rises to high and it floods the carb (low speed jets?). I have triple checked the fuel level, changed floats, rebuilt the carb and still no solution. Any ideas would be appreciated.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->This is weird Stu. So you mean the infamous "dirt" was coming INTO the carb FROM the return line?? That's weird!

Just a shot in the dark, but do you think the filter you placed on the return line might now be restricting the flow of fuel back to the tank? If so, that could be a possible cause for the fuel level seeming too high. Sounds good anyway.

Man! I wish we could get this one nailed down. That carb problem has been plaguing you for a while now. Anyone got any more ideas?? -Mac.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Fuel flows well from the return line. When I suck the carb dry the fuel from the return line drains freely out of the filter so I know its flowing well. The stalling problem is the same as it has been for some time. I thought the dirt was causing the jets to plug but since the filter in the return line no dirt so I assume that the dirt was comming from the tank through the return line to the carb. My theory is that when the car cools down the gas and air in the carb bowl contract causing a vacuum which sucks fuel from the tank through the return line. Since the head from the fuel pump is greater than the head from the return line it sucks gas out of the tank? I'm not sure if this is the case but its the only theory I have at the moment. [FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Have you ever opened up the carb and cleaned out the float bowl? Disregard the following if you have checked this out.

As gas deteriorates, deposits form (usually dark brown stuff)in the fuael system. This is especially true on cars that sit for a while with old gas in the carb. I had a motorcycle that gummed up at least once a month.

The deposits form in the bottom of the float bowl, which happens to be where the jets pick up the gas. The idle jets are very small and can clog VERY easily with this stuff. This may be why your car 'loses power'. You may be correct that the primary circuit is clogging first (works better on secondaries) since the car runs on these most of the time.

My suggestion is to take the top off of your carb (careful so you don't ruin the gasket or bend the float) and clean out any dirt/grit/gunk in the bottom. Pull the jets out (one at a time as to not mix them up) and clean them (especially the bore)with a spray carb cleaner. Make sure to clean the idle jets as well, some are located in another location on the carb. If you have info on float level adjustment, make those as well.

Put it all back together and add a high quality gas additive to clean anything that you may have missed. Hopefully it will work OK now.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Several years ago, with my first X1/9 (carburated)
I learn the hard way on the side effects of the very strong carburetor cleaners that are added into the tank because they dissolve the gunk in the tank all right, but then the dissolved gunk ends clogging the carburetor just the way you are describing. I remember that I had developed a skill to a quick clean the jets on the middle of the road just to have to stop a few days latter and do it again!
I agree with Mac in the way that you should try to fix the problem at the source, and I think that you should remove and thoroughly clean your fuel tank, then the carb and also to install new fuel lines. Good luck, Gilles<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->When I rebuilt the carb I cleaned it so it shines so I know that there is no gunk in the carb. I haven't done the tank since I thought the fuel filter would catch gunk and I have never added anything to the tank to clean it. Since it snowed for the first time last night I am about to put the car away for the winter. I plan on rebuilding the engine this winter so as part of the work I will pull and clean the gas tank. Thanks for the ideas. Stu<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I have heard some owners say such things in the past as well, that they experienced some unexplainable or unresolvable issues like these, and that cleaning out/resealing the tank solved the issues. I was hesitant to suggest it before, because I was hoping it would be something more simple. Now it seems you have tried most everything else, so the tank itself seems the only suspect left. Even though the X is heading for a restful winter slumber, I hope you will remain active here in the forums. Peace, -Mac.
