I've spent two days trying to prepare my car (this is the race car that I bought late last year that has been stuck in storage ever since).
The story didn't begin well as the trailer broke during the unloading/loading of the car once I got home. I found that my fire extinguisher had been stolen (£200 worth!) and someone had damaged the lhs rear paintwork.
Not to be discouraged I set about installing some brake lights (the car didn't have any when I bought it and I had to have some before I would be allowed on the circuit). Several hours later with everything physically installed I gave up from frustration - how hard can it be?
I drove off this morning to the track determined to get things working (with all my tools loaded up to finish the wiring job) and manage at least one session. It turned into a beautifully warm day (for England in September that is) with a suitably dry track. Soon after arriving I found out that it was stritcly no slicks which was a real downer since that was all I had with me, but I would be allowed out on a parade lap. Not quite what I had in mind, but a great opportunity to make sure the car does actually work!
The wiring turned out to be a bad earth connection (how many times have I been through this - I really should know better by now), and soon enough I had a set of ultra-bright, shiny new brake lights! Incidentally these are actually clusters of LEDS fixed in plastic pods that were originally intended for large signboards such as they have at stadiums - a bargain at £10 per pod and as bright as the £200 rainlights being sold for single seaters and only a fraction heavier!
There were some truely amazing cars present in all shapes and sizes from many different eras although I think the most common were the lotus club and 7-replica contingent. Nothing new there but the rarer cars certainly made for good entertainment. I even got a chance to see my old car which has changed hands a couple of times since I sold it - but it was still in good working order (even if the bodywork is a little past it's best) and sounding as good as ever.
Queing up for the session the car proved a bit of a star with several people taking interest and one person doing a sort of home-video interview. Utter self-gratification, but it made me feel better!
The car runs well enough - I've already proven this but I had no idea of how well it drives so rolling out onto the circuit, even if restricted to 50mph, was something of a pleasure. I quickly proved that all of the gears worked, the steering proved really light despite the 8" wide slicks on the front, the brakes were a little pathetic (far too long stood without any use). The throttle certainly worked, the car may only have 130bhp but it definitely knows what to do with them! The sound was awesome (Abarth exhaust box and twin-40 Webers) and just got better as things warmed up! Making as much use of the speed limit as possible I was just beginning to get used to the steering when it was all over.
All I have to show for it is a broken trailer, a bit of sunburn and a huge grin that I will be wearing for weeks! (not forgetting the huge hole in my wallet...) Now all I have to do is find a decent track day that allows slicks and I will be laughing!

Now all I have to do is find some intermediate/wet tyres in case the weather doesn't hold!
Hopefully I will get some new pictures to showoff!
