Gun control

The ending of your first paragraph...

probably sums up the situation prettily accurately-gun control does not fall strictly along party lines even when including independents-in the face of a referendum it probably would be defeated by a marginal amount. Specific measures might pass, but who knows.

Your other point about supermajorities makes government by minorites in reality-that might appeal to a perpetual minority but after a time it would collapse as it has and will in California relative to budget legislation. Majorities won't stand for it forever.

Polling bias...

hard to alays say-here is the bias during the last election. Bit of a stretch to call Gallup 'liberal' with there reported numbers running so much in favor of Romney. Might be easier to just say they stink at polling.

In reality it would make lack of government by minority. I'm not sure that makes much difference in it's sustainability. People are naturally control freaks and wouldn't likely stand for it for long. The best systems will never work because the system everyone wants is the one they control somewhat regardless of it's merits.

The best system is one that works...

all things considered. Otherwise you are just talking about an 'ideal system'-usually one based on an assumption of human nature and nurture being radically different than experience tells us they are. It's fine entetainment but not really serious political philosophy.

Reversion to the mean?

Or maybe a simple acceptance. The more shootings we have the less mass and acceleration each one has until basically nobody cares.
The 'taboo' factor has waned in gun issues.

How do you figure that?

Just because he mentions other issues doesn't mean he and his people aren't keenly aware of what is going on in public opinion. His polling and analysis of it in the election was far more accurate and effective than the GOP's. Vastly better in fact. Manifestly better-he won by an electoral college blowout.

Just because he was more accurate and effective than the GOP doesn't mean he is/was any good. And of course I don't care what "system" we have as long as it leaves me and alone and everyone else alone that wants to be left alone.

Well, in electoral politics there...

is only one 'good' and that is getting elected. If you want to be left alone and you want elected officials to somehow help you in that goal-you are up against it and have the GOP or nothing. Any move towards 'less' government is in their rather undextrous hands at the moment-the Paul revolution having fizzled out at the Presidential level.

Complaining that Obama is 'no good' doesn't matter-he won.

The Toomey-Manchin compromise was brilliant. It made both pro-gun senators appear to be making a "common sense" compromise while in reality the bill did far more to relax gun control laws than it did to tighten them. It was a win-win scenario for gun rights advocates.

Now if they'll only address more pressing fundamental issues in lieu of usual demagoguery, preening, class warfare, ad nauseum...

No...

'they' are just referred to as 'they'. I suspect it isn't a flattering handle, but specifics are scarce. Maybe it just means 'everyone who isn't us'. Think?
