Just the kind of situation one needs in mid Aug. This leads to a couple of questions.

Can anybody tell me what the levers do. All the markings have been worn off so I don't know the functions of the 3 levers. I think the one on the drivers side controls heat and defrost (down for floor heat up for defrost) One should control the temp. but I dont know which or if up is cooler or hotter. And the third should be fresh or recirc. air. but I have no clue which direction.

Are the valves expensive or should I be going to the plumbing dept of the local hardware store. I was thinking of just shutting off the heater line at the hose by the engine until next fall. Has anybody tried this?
Thanks again. Stu
P.S. Its a 78 x with a 1300 eng. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->It is a '75 and not a '78, but here goes...

Left lever: outside airflow - up = off, dn = max
Cntr lever: flow direction - up = floor, dn = defrost
Rite lever: heater output - up = max, dn = off

I suspect yours is laid out in a similar way. See if maybe you were moving a different lever, I have had moments of that myself! If the heat is on & can't be turned off, check wether any of the levers feel a> stuck, or b> suspiciously loose.

Let us know what you find. It is likely either the air inlet door being stuck open, or the heater control valve being stuck open. The door can be unstuck, and the valve is still available aftermarket... although they can be irritating to install! ;p -Mac.

make sure it is not just the cable housing slipping through its mount at the heater valve.
Stick your head into the passenger footwell and look behind the center console to see it.
