[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Carl,

May be a bad ground. You can have a co-worker or two push you to compression start it so you can get home. I used to have this problem on my Spider 2000 and it was a bad connection at the ignition switch. The hot wire had melted the connector over the years and the connection was iffy. Of course, on mine, the electronics wouldn't work tho.

Has this happened before or is this the 1st time?

My ignition is clicking, so, that lets out the ignition wire melting.

I work next door to a European Motors mechanic, and while they won't work on Fiats, they have no problem lending me tools when I need them, so in a bit, I am going to run over and borrow their floor jack and check the ground cable under the car. Hopefully that will do it, but if not, then I will compression start it, and get it home, call napa or someone and go get a replacement starter, and hope I can get it in I guess...

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->It's very likely not the starter or solenoid. Weak voltage to the solenoid behaves exactly like this. There are a few connections to check. If it's anything like the '81, there's a weak connector under the steering column that burns (connects keyswitch to wiring harness). The spade connector that plugs onto the solenoid gets fatigued and no longer holds tight also. Wiring diagrams would help identify other things to check. Always possible the keyswitch is going out. I fought these problems on my blackX and finally added a relay on the firewall to fire the solenoid. This finally corrected the whole problem.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Because I don't drive my Xs as often as I like, the cars frequently sit for long periods of time. On more than one occasion I have had the same symptoms and couldn't figure out what was going on. The cars wouldn't start even after I recharged the battery with a floor charger. In each case, I swapped the battery for a new one and solved the problem. Don't rule out the battery as the problem; get it tested.

One of the mechanics told me to check the cable attaching to the solinoid (I think, it was 10 years ago) and the cable was lose. I cleaned around the bolt holding the cable and tightened the bolt back down.

Problem fixed in no time. It was both loose and dirt had gotten under and around it. Thats why it was such an intermitant fault.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I just replaced my starter (79X) and there are 2 connections to it that can come off quite easily a plug on connection, and a clip connection.

1) Check those!

2) Also, DEFINITELY check for corrosion and loose connections on those AND on your ground strap which runs from the tranny to the car frame. (THIS TIP IS THANKS TO TONY NATOLI! If I remember correctly, he had a starting problem just because his ground strap was loose/dirty, and it took him 3 weeks to find the problem!) Clean them ALL thoroughly and make sure they're tight.

3) Use a voltage tester at all the point at all the points you find suspect. (Digital at Walmart --$14.)You make have a bad electrical connection somewhere, and have a perfectly good starter.

4) If you have a Haynes, follow the procedure in it to test the starter. You may have a bad solenoid (which is only $30) and not have to replace the entire starter.

5) It just may be that you starter needed to be cleaned/brushes replaced/refurbished, but check everything else first!

Certainly get other ideas. Mine are limited. I'm a beginner, so take this advice with a bit of salt, although I've just been been through some starter blues, so I learned a bit.

Good luck! Let us know...

Last year something similar happen to me, I don't know if applies since your car has an earlier fuse box type but here it goes.

There is a brown thick cable that comes from the battery into the fuse box that connects to other two or three smaller cables, something like a power distribution box, anyway the connector (brown cable) INSIDE this small plastic box was so corroded that it melted the cable right at the connector.

I went bananas trying to locate the problem (car complete powerless) until one of my neighbors stopped by and started tracing the power route starting from the battery until he got to this small plastic box, he simply cut the corroded connector, crimped a new one and presto! the car ran great after that.
Good luck, Gilles

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I didn't see anyone say it. Check the battery terminal connections. I've seen it several times where the connection is loose or corroded at the battery terminals, but enough to turn on gauges, radio, etc. Then when you engage the starter, the load is enough to break the connection from the battery. This often shows as an intermitent (sp?) problem. This also explains why a charge sometimes doesn't help.

Bottom line, check all your wires and connections. Make sure they are tight and not corroded.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->If it started fine when you went to work, you probably have the same problem I did. The small wire that triggers the solenoid may have come off. The female connector on mine got loose and would periodically fall off. It can be quite a test of one's pain threshold when trying to push hot cooling hoses out of the way in order to get the wire plugged back in
