Interior in great shape, body fair and seemed to be running ok. The PO had ackowledged that the cam tower gasket was leaking, but had responded that had no cooling/overheating problem to his knowledge. Test drove it on Thursday for a half hour, no problems. Drove it home yesterday (hot day, temp had gotten to 101). Avoided traffic jams, car was running hot, used the old heater trick (what a pleasant drive, with temps in 100s and running the heater full blast). Was acellerating, car started making pinging noise (like insufficient octane noise), looked at the temp gauge and the needle had pegged all the way. Shut it down immediately and had it towed home. Car restarted last night after it had cooled down and found that the coolant had just about all boiled out of it. Refilled and let sit overnight, while I spent the night feeling like a schmuck that had let himself be taken to the cleaners. Started it this AM, neighbor took it out and drove it later ran ok for about 3 miles and died. Pushed it home to neighbors' where it now sits. He's going to have it towed over to the local Euro car shop for some diagnostic action. I would imagine that it could be any number of things, but... any ideas out there? Any hope of salvaging my self respect? If it's too bad, i.e., too much work $$$$ required, he's going to try and unload it as is. And I end up feeling like an even worse schlep <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The rad could be plugged up, you may have a blown head gasket. The old stand by is you have an air pocket in the coolant system. The fav areas air pockets is in the frond rad or the hose on the passengers side that feeds the heater. You could put a drain and flush kit on that hose and open it if you have an overheating problem to get rid of unwanted air pockets. That is the first thing I would do as well as lood at the rad and make sure that it is working, flowing, sufficiently. I have become an expert on the X coolant and overheating systems. Try those fixes first.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Let us know, I know a person with a FI head that would probably be willing to help you.

As for the "schmuck" part, I bought an X once that was actually two cars put together to form one. Had a big old weld right behind the seats. The front was from a read car, the rear was from a blue car. I didn't realize this for about 3 months. Doh!

Do a compression test and I think it'll prove ya have at least a blown head gasket.

And the PO might just be innocent... pegging the temp just once can do that.

My experience has been generally just the head gasket... but ya might as well do the valves and check the true-ness of the head also.

Perform a compression test to validate the rings are (Assumed) OK by squirting oil in the cylinders after one round of tests. Test with throttle fully open also.

Hey... ya did OK... now you. your son, and the NEW owner can get REAL familiar with the car quickly.

Then heed everything Perry told ya... he learned from good advice and bad experiences!

The shop figures about $1700 including some other miscellaneous work. My neighbor's thinking about it and I'm hoping he has it done because the rest of the car (tranny, body, interior)is in damn good shape. If not, there'll be an '88 listed on the FSW site SOON!
