I have a complete set that I've been trying to remove from my race shell (without damaging) for some time. They're supposed to just slide off (sort-of) but these ones seems to be welded on!

The snorkels were fabricated and distributed quite widely about 15 years ago. As for who made them though - that I don't know. I DO know someone who has one of them though - next time I see him I shall ask.....

I'm on the verge of giving the car away though and if I can't find someone who wants it then it's going to a breakers. (I don't really want to do this, but space on my drive REALLY is at a premium)

There is also the added problem that I'm the other side of the atlantic, and as Mac will happily attest, I'm absolutely crap at sending things (yes Mac it is on my desk at work, all ready to go just as soon as I got over this no-money stage of the year). If you do want them, and I CAN remove them, I'll put together a package of bits and pieces (light-weight items only) and send it over. I'll see what other goodies I have in my (parent's) garage too.

The snorkel - well I don't know I haven't spoken to Theo yet, but I believe it is a Faza item (the other posts jogged my memory). The original snorkel (btw) was created by Abarth for their rally cars (X1/9s) and was used to feed air down to the two twin-choke carbs that were fitted to the 1800 twin-cam used (hence why the snorkel box fits on the cabin side of the engine lid)

Happy Thanksgiving to you too. I found the site through a search engine, I don't remember which. I like Japanese sites because I can read some of the language and find the Japanese X lovers have some very nice cars.

I have the door mouldings on 2 of my '87 Xs. They do slide off, but they only slide about 1 inch or so, then they are lifted away from the car. What is left is many round spool-looking bits screwed to the car. Removing these is where all the unscrewing would come in.

I hope we can get together sometime soon- I am currently on baby watch- my son should be born any moment now. You had mentioned in the past about putting together a local chapter- anyone else nearby interested? Talk to you soon.- Jeff

I think the Internet has to be one of the best things that has happened for X1/9 enthusiasts in many years. Because of this technology we are able to generate instant awareness all over the world for the X1/9 and for other believers like ourselves.

I never even cared about the Internet until the first time I saw the UK X1/9 Club's website

Ever since that moment, I have been smitten with the possibilities that the web represents for all of us X1/9 folks. It is good to see that there is still a healthy interest in these cars over in Japan. It is my understanding that (because of Japanese law) it becomes increasingly expensive to own any older car there. These enthusiasts must really love the X, and I think that is fantastic!

Our intent is one day to convert an X1/9 to run on water

Sure, we'd have to make sure the water system was exhausted well away from any body panels

but it sure would be a fantastic conversion!

In the meantime, Holly's thinking about converting one to more conventional battery electric power. Anyone who's ever seen Mark Mongillo's "FIAMP" electric 600 knows how cool this stuff can be. I'd love to do up an X -Mac.

I worked on a research project last year with the lots of University folks and some people from a fuel cell research company on the east coast (not going to name it... the project wasn't public, but you can probably figure it out

) on a fuel cell car for the "Tour Del Sol"... we abandoned the project eventually, as the current fuel cells of sufficient power for a car require hydrogen bottled under rediculous pressures - simply wasn't safe for road use. The folks who specialize in this stuff went back to the drawing board to work on developing a hydrogen distiller that is able to distill enough hydrogen from the ambient air to work - a project more complicated than the fuel cell itself!

If you sit at atmospheric pressure (14.7 psi) and add a say, 6 lbs. of boost with a blower, One would have almost a total of 21 pounds of pressure to force air and fuel into the combustion chamber.

If you can gain a say 3 pounds of pressure from just catching it while moving through the air, then why not utilize it for a way of forcing more air and fuel into the cylinder... now at say, 24 lbs.

(I added atmospheric for demonstration purposes... if you were to go to 7,000 feet or so, then atmospheric would drop about 3/4 of a pound, I think. That's why blown and turbocharged vehicles do so well at higher altitudes... they can make up for the loss... whereas a computer controlled atmospheric dependant auto can adjust the air/fuel ratio for the loss, but not make up for the POWER loss.)

Hence the snorkel... utilizing what's free and already there... add a blower and you can capitalize more...

Does this gentleman you mentioned have any more blowers laying around?

There would be no reason to increase boost in such a manner, since it's easy to generate huge boosts with a supercharger. Making an engine that can take the boost is usually the problem.
The main advantage I can see to a snorkel would be in increased access to cold air (where else you gonna route it?).

It seems to me that this (supercharging that is) would only work on carbed cars, not the FI models, as the AFM and computer would work against the effect of the supercharger, no?

I did a quick web search, and there are a number of companies that make aftermarket superchargers, but they aren't cheap - all of the kits I saw ran between 2 & 3K (US) for a roots style blower. OTOH, I think this would be an easy adaptation - either mounted in the trunk, or where the stock A/C unit would have fit.

Not really. Since you are just putting more air into the engine, the compute will try to compensate by adding more fuel. The ECU just tries to keep the mixture stoiciometric (not sure if that's spelled right), or the proper mixture for perfect combustion (not lean or rich). However some say that the ECUs are set towards lean a little bit. Modifications would need to be made to the FI system to allow it to spray more fuel (bigger injectors, different fuel pressure regulator). James Seabolt on Mirafiori turbo charged his Spider and is using a near stock FI system.

Because of the size you cannot mount it where the A/C compressor was due to interference with the exhaust. In addition, a v-belt is not adequate to drive the supercharger so you would need a toothed belt or serpentine belt requiring a custom crank pulley. To fit the blower would most likely require removal of the water pump, replacing it with an electric one, an expensive proposition in its own right.

I don't see how you could mount it in the trunk and get the drive to it. It has to be rigidly attached to the engine for proper belt alignment.

The AFM would not respond well to supercharging because it is designed for pressures less than atmospheric.

I have drawn some 3d models of the engine compartment and tried to fit an Eaton MP-45 blower. It can be done, but not inexpensively or easily.

A complete replacement system is down to about £200 (complete with controller - £120 without) which is roughly $300US. That hardly classes as expensive. You would need a large pulley on the cam and a small one on the blower. In addition to fitment problems, there would be quite a bit of strain on the timing belt and the starter. A blower takes about 20-30hp to run at speed so I would not want it attached to my timing belt.

I must agree with you about two points, the "cold-air" philosophy, and building an engine to handle the pressure extremes... I tend to wanna stand firm on some of the other aspects... and here is why...

Generating pressure may be somewhat "easy", but does have a price paid for in horsepower. If some of that pressure can be made "free" with a smaller puffer that consumes less power, than that might be beneficial over a larger puffer.

Secondly, drag racers build/install scoops and turn them forward... for all the pressure they can git... and THEN make. (Cool air would be abundant in an open car.)

Had you grown up in the good old USA you woulda owned yur own set o' wheels like Doc an' me by the age of 4!

Doc, mine was a Murray Tractor as I was too fat to fit in a pedal car and too uncoordinated to operate a strap drive. Had to have a chain.

I have a collection of about 17 now with about 7 completely restored and two more in the works. Still tryin ta get a tractor again at a decent price.

As far as Fire Trucks go... there are some nice repops out there for about 200 including shipping on eBay. Some pay more than 300 for the same model. You can e-mail some of the suppliers and they will deal with ya. An original Sadface or Dipside Fire Truck in decent condition would probably run 1500 bucks.

I bought one Pursuit Plane that way...

Back to the larger pedal cars... and the snorkels,

I WANT ONE, they look COOL, and are indeed FUNCTIONAL! I've ducted the left cooling vent directly to the carb intake via the stock air cleaner for a "slight ram effect" and it WORKS! I bet I have earned 3 - 5 ponies at 80 MPH with a hacksaw, 10 bucks in 2 1/2 inch ducting, a modified tin-can for a transition fitting at the scoop, and 2 stainless steel clamps.

But I KNOW the pressure is GREATER over the top of the car...

Call it a cheap you-know-what if you will, but it is effective.
