first- is it possible to get a non-point type distributor that will work with a 1300 carb'ed engine
What about the marelli Plex system? from what i gather it's an Alfa item, but i believe Ulix has one-- how do you set one up? what other components are needed (black boxes, coils, ???) I think i can find one of these for an alfa- what other systems are there?

Another question is about ignition advance:
with the electronic ignition do you still need to use the vacuum line to advance the ignition? this will probably be an autocross only vehicle. i Believe the vacuum line is actually a retardation device on the 1300 dist. so that i cannot just disconnect it and use the stock dist, but for a newer electronic ignitions?

You can accomplish a fine electronic ignition conversion simply by swapping out for the Bosch distributor from any Yugo. That one is identical to the distributor that came stock in the FI X1/9s...

The unit fits right into the X, and all you need apart from the distributor is the little black control unit (and the heat sink it mounts on) that (in a Yugo) is mounted on the left side of the engine bay (on the wheel well hump?) and the associated wiring.

You can often pick them up cheap used if you find them in a wrecking yard, and it is simple enough to mount the controller inside the spare tire compartment of your X, patch into power and run the little sensor wires through the firewall to the distributor. Do a search of the archives for "yugo distributor" or similar for more details on that swap.

Alternatively, you could do the same thing by getting the distributor & control box out of a FI X1/9. The only difference between the FI X & Yugo setups is the controller box. In the Yugo it is a tiny little thing on a heat sink. In the FI X it is a much larger box that is mounted ahead of the right rear strut tower, basically in a mirror image position to where the fuel filler tube is. I suggest to go for the Yugo version if you can just because it is a much smaller sealed unit. In either case you will need the associated wire harness attached to the controller.

If you go for the Bosch swap, I believe you should just be able to hook the existing vacuum advance line right up to the new dis and be done with it - someone more knowledgeable please correct me if that is not true.

Also, if you do the Bosch swap you will need to use the cap & rotor for a 1500 X1/9 instead of the set you currently use on the 1300. But that is easy enough.

And you are right, the vacuum unit on a 1300 is to retard the spark. If you use the stock 1300 distributor, DO NOT use the vacuum line, and set the timing at 10 degrees static. If you use a Yugo or 1500 X1/9 distributor, then do use the vacuum line and set the timing to 10 degrees with the line disconnected. The Yugo distributor has a lot of vacuum advance, so be sure to listen for part-throttle pinging. The Plex kit is complete: distributor, coil, and ignition module... nothing to round up, but overpriced IMHO. The Yugo or 1500 X1/9 setups are a huge improvement in reliability over the point set up.

It's been a decade or so since new Yugos have been available here as well. I am only aware of one model that was available here (though I may be wrong)is the GV series. I think importation of these ended around 1991 (again, I may be wrong). Would this be the same as the Sana?
