interesting x-1/9 engine swap engine

I'll take two. Alright, ten, yes ten X1/9s for the price of one of those V8 engines...

Its a wonderful engine, I think its only good for 125 hours of running but what a 125 hours.

I've dreamed of this engine in an X for a long time. When I lived in Italy my colleague explained that alot of modern X1/9 racers run bike engines. Nothing beats the power to weight ratio, but no reverse.

I figured if ever get to build another one of my fantasy Xs. The next will be a totally Ratted out, window & interior-less, olive drab Stealth X with a 300 HP Busa Turbo and no reverse. Pushing it out of parking stalls would be so worth the look on the Porsche/Ferrari owner face when you blow past them in the beater from hell.:headbang:

Yes I've thought about that one for a while. It's a pretty compact motor. I don't know that there is enough room in the engine bay. Plus, IIRC the motor is 28k, and then you still have to spend another 6k to fit a transaxle capable of handling the power...all a little rich for my blood.

You guys are a hoot. If it doesn't have a FIAT engine, it's not a FIAT. If I had a Ferrari engine I think I'd look for, oh I don't know, a Ferrari to put it in. :headbang:

Yeah I would have trouble calling it a fiat, but then the Lancia Stratos had a Ferrari engine and they still call that a Lancia... I doubt I'd ever do it as I'm pretty sure I'll be happy with my current X1/9 for many years to come.

You're right about the Lancia. And the Lotus Elise and Exige have Toyota engines and that doesn't make them Toyotas. I still love my X for what it is.

Ive always wanted a Busa powered X, or a VR6 powered X. Bother are music to my ears and would hauls serious booty:music:

What would "belong" in an X1/9 IMO

I dunno, FIAT owns Ferrari and did during X1/9 production (I believe), so I think it might be okay to drop a Ferrari sourced engine in. I think it would also be okay to use an ALFA, Lancia, or Maserati engine. As far as bikes go, FIAT owned Piaggio/Aprilia until 1999 according to the web, so you could use one of those engines, or maybe a Yamaha R1 or R6 engine if you think the sponsorship is a big enough bond. Of course it wouldn't make the power of a 'Busa, but it would be more corporately correct.

Historic mixed car/engines that come to mind: Citroen/Maserati, Ford/Volvo,Mazda,DeTomaso,Jaguar, VW/Bentley, oh, and didn't the FIAT Dino and Ferrari Dino share the same engine?

No possible (oops, I'd better say "remotely reasonable" instead of "possible", as there are horrors beyond my imagination out there) way that the Ferrari 308 drivetrain could be made to fit in an X... But when I made that comment about 3.0 liter V8 exxies being common if you knew the right search term on ebay, I had just finished reading this, and it reminded me of the suggestion that the 308 GTSi is just an X, grown up a bit.

I'm far from alone here:
- Try pronouncing "bb4re"
- Someone here was using 154GTSi as a vanity plate on an X (that's clever!)
- Even some FerrariChat folks who are familiar with both cars; there was a long thread over there the Classic Motorsports article comparing the 308 and X (and yeah, I know that jjay is is our mole:innocent:)

Ooops - sorry about leaving you off

Meant to add your site, couldn't remember the URL offhand, went away, went away to do something else, came back and clicked submit without remembering that I wasn't done.

The X1/9 came out a bit after the Stratos and at about the same time as the Ferrari 308GT4. All are Bertone designs. The Stratos is almost a pure homologation special; no trunk, zero rearward visibility. The 308GT4 is perhaps more similar to the X1/9 except larger. It also is body/frame construction vs. unibody for the X.
A V6 would be very cool in an X1/9 - it seems like you'd need a legless driver, however.

fastest route for Ferrari V8

Ferrari V8 swap is a very cheap one but the engine is using the old L-Jetronic so the horses are lost during the years. The Lancia Thema 8.32 has all you need for a Ferrari V8 engine swap(it is mounted transversely).
The whole power train can be had for less than 3000euros.
I was thinking about this swap a while ago and realized it doesnt worth the money because of poor performance of the original management system and the astronomical prices for spare parts. Imagine you need a pinion for the gearbox or a new camshaft.... Plus the fact that you are stuck with the 220HP.
In my opinion, these are the best bank for the buck swaps:
1. 1.6 16V for being a straight swap and very reliable
2. 1.4 Turbo from Punto GT - way reliable than uno turbo and with much more potential.
3. K20/K24 Frankenstein
Supreme Swap: NSX engine + gearbox
The problem with the swap solutions for the X is that they are mainly done outside Europe where the engine choice is limited.

A good mechanic should think like this:
1. The use of a turbo engine should be avoided because of the limited space in the rear and the original weight bias of the car.
2. From the N/A engines, the best for the X should be the ones with aluminium block and the exhaust to the back side of the car.
The ZZT231 and the K20a are the best in their class. The variety of performance mods makes the K20 a winner.

or a VR6 powered X. Bother are music to my ears and would hauls serious booty:music:

VR6 in an X is something i've thought of many times, when i'm not toying with Fiats I play with VW's...this would sound deadly too
