After much checking I made sure that the timing was correct and I readjusted the point gap. It runs much better now and is lots of fun to drive. I noticed that the vacuum retard doesn't retard at all when the vacuum line is hooked up but it may because there doesn't seem to be a very high vacuum in the line. It doesn't seem to be affecting performace so what the heck.
Anyway one more x1/9 on the road and thanks to all those who played coach. Stu

The problem is that the test results vary greatly sometimes depending on who did the tests. Anything generated by Fiat themselves is bound to be a little more generous than reality, anything generated by some car magazines is likely to range from 'more honest' to 'conservative' - but again, will vary widely depending on the individual car they tested as well as the competency of the test drivers.
I am looking at the "Fiat X1/9 Gold Portfolio" by Brooklands Books (ISBN: 1 85520 3561). This book is pretty worthwhile if you can find a copy. It is basically a compilation of tons of old car magazine articles on the X. Much easier than trying to collect a bunch of old magazines!
In here are some test results from various car magazines of the world. I always take these tests with a grain of salt, so to speak, meaning they are not necessarily definitive figures, but ballparkish anyhow...
Road & Track, March 1973: 175kmh (108.5 mph) @ 6600 rpm.
Autocar, December 1972: 105 mph @ 6400 rpm.
Autosport, April 1974: 102 mph @ 6500 rpm.
Road & Track, May 1974: 113 mph @ 7000 rpm.
Motor, May 1974: 104 mph @ 6900 rpm.
Car South Africa, Feb. 1977: 100 mph @ 6000 rpm.
Autocar, March 1977: 100 mph @ 6000 rpm.
Motor Sport, April 1977: 106 mph @ 6900 rpm.
These figures all are based on the 1300cc engine with the 4 speed tranny IN STOCK FORM. There's about 40 more articles in here, but you get the picture. I think your car should easily be able to rev higher than it currently does. My '75 X (1300) can rev right past redline without a whole lot of effort. -Mac.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The problem is that the test results vary greatly sometimes depending on who did the tests. Anything generated by Fiat themselves is bound to be a little more generous than reality, anything generated by some car magazines is likely to range from 'more honest' to 'conservative' - but again, will vary widely depending on the individual car they tested as well as the competency of the test drivers.
I am looking at the "Fiat X1/9 Gold Portfolio" by Brooklands Books (ISBN: 1 85520 3561). This book is pretty worthwhile if you can find a copy. It is basically a compilation of tons of old car magazine articles on the X. Much easier than trying to collect a bunch of old magazines!
In here are some test results from various car magazines of the world. I always take these tests with a grain of salt, so to speak, meaning they are not necessarily definitive figures, but ballparkish anyhow...
Road & Track, March 1973: 175kmh (108.5 mph) @ 6600 rpm.
Autocar, December 1972: 105 mph @ 6400 rpm.
Autosport, April 1974: 102 mph @ 6500 rpm.
Road & Track, May 1974: 113 mph @ 7000 rpm.
Motor, May 1974: 104 mph @ 6900 rpm.
Car South Africa, Feb. 1977: 100 mph @ 6000 rpm.
Autocar, March 1977: 100 mph @ 6000 rpm.
Motor Sport, April 1977: 106 mph @ 6900 rpm.
These figures all are based on the 1300cc engine with the 4 speed tranny IN STOCK FORM. There's about 40 more articles in here, but you get the picture. I think your car should easily be able to rev higher than it currently does. My '75 X (1300) can rev right past redline without a whole lot of effort. -Mac.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
