I am currently using Continental's 205/60/13.
They provide a lot of grip as you can imagine, but when I purchased them unfortunately I didn't measure the tire's clearance and I ended having to manufacture aluminum spacers and longer wheel studs, otherwise the tires would not rotate freely because they where rubbing against the struts!
I think that the max width you can go without spacers and longer studs is 185/60/13, and I recall reading that you where consider buying 195/55/13.
I am not completely sure, but I think the 205/60/13's are 123mm wide, the 185/60/13's are 111mm wide and therefore the 195/55/13's should be 107mm wide if this is true (my numbers)then you should not have any problems with clearance.
On the bad side of ussing the 205/60's is that the tires are much wider and they DO slow considerably the car, specially when accelerating but if this is not a major issue for you (remember that I have to keep up with the heavy LA traffic),then the slower acceleration will be forgotten on the very first hard turn! You will be tradding quick response for awesome traction
specially if you install some heavy duty springs and Koni shocks!!!

Let's just say I had X1/9's for the last 20 years and I tried a lot of tire sizes. Let me share my conclusions.
First, all tires are not created equal. The first number (185, in the case of 185/60-13 tires) is the width of the tire in millimeter. In theory. In practice, there is a slight tolerance between tire manufacturer's. And there is some tires that are completely off. Like the 175/50-13 Pirelli P7 tires that were WIDER than all the 185/60 I had seen. Sometimes, the difference can be as much as an inch, so if you got 195/55-13 tires that fit, it doesn't mean they would ALL fit.
175/50-13. They fit but they look lost in the wheelwell.
185/55-13. Size really difficult to obtain on the North American continent. The few I had seen were all season tires. They also look a little bit lost in the wheelwell.
185/60-13. This is the most recommended size for the X1/9 if you are looking for a better handling than the stock size.
195/55-13. Hard find. May fit. May not...
205/.... Too wide for the front unless you modify your fender lips OR raise the car (!!!) But 205/60-13 are a perfect fit for the rear. That's what I'm running currently with the 185/60 in front, event with a lowered X1/9.
195/60-13. You will get a lot of clearance problems in the front. Stick to the smaller 185/60 and fit the 195 or bigger in the rear.
anything-14. I ran 195/55-14 on my car for a year. At the end, I had found the right height and offset so they won't rub, but it was out of question of lowering the car. They were looking wonderful but I finally decided that I want good handling more than good lookin'. With some trouble you may find the good offset wheel and a low enough tire to fit in the 14" size, but I don't think it worth the trouble. In UK there is many X1/9 with 14" tires, but they have lower profile tires than we got in North America.
So you got 2 choices:
1) Listening to my wise advices
2) Do as I did. Learn by yourself. Make some mistakes. Find what is your limit. Maybe your priority are only on the look and you will live with tires that barely fit. It's your choice.

I used to run them on my '77. You need at least a 5.5" rim, better a 6". 5" won't cut it.
My rims stuck out right to the edge of the fender and I had to cut away some of the metal in front of the front wheel. If you have wheel that don't stick out as far you may get away w/o doing this.

I am currently using Continental's 205/60/13.
They provide a lot of grip as you can imagine, but when I purchased them unfortunately I didn't measure the tire's clearance and I ended having to manufacture aluminum spacers and longer wheel studs, otherwise the tires would not rotate freely because they where rubbing against the struts!
I think that the max width you can go without spacers and longer studs is 185/60/13, and I recall reading that you where consider buying 195/55/13.
I am not completely sure, but I think the 205/60/13's are 123mm wide, the 185/60/13's are 111mm wide and therefore the 195/55/13's should be 107mm wide if this is true (my numbers)then you should not have any problems with clearance.
On the bad side of ussing the 205/60's is that the tires are much wider and they DO slow considerably the car, specially when accelerating but if this is not a major issue for you (remember that I have to keep up with the heavy LA traffic),then the slower acceleration will be forgotten on the very first hard turn! You will be tradding quick response for awesome traction
specially if you install some heavy duty springs and Koni shocks!!!

Let's just say I had X1/9's for the last 20 years and I tried a lot of tire sizes. Let me share my conclusions.
First, all tires are not created equal. The first number (185, in the case of 185/60-13 tires) is the width of the tire in millimeter. In theory. In practice, there is a slight tolerance between tire manufacturer's. And there is some tires that are completely off. Like the 175/50-13 Pirelli P7 tires that were WIDER than all the 185/60 I had seen. Sometimes, the difference can be as much as an inch, so if you got 195/55-13 tires that fit, it doesn't mean they would ALL fit.
175/50-13. They fit but they look lost in the wheelwell.
185/55-13. Size really difficult to obtain on the North American continent. The few I had seen were all season tires. They also look a little bit lost in the wheelwell.
185/60-13. This is the most recommended size for the X1/9 if you are looking for a better handling than the stock size.
195/55-13. Hard find. May fit. May not...
205/.... Too wide for the front unless you modify your fender lips OR raise the car (!!!) But 205/60-13 are a perfect fit for the rear. That's what I'm running currently with the 185/60 in front, event with a lowered X1/9.
195/60-13. You will get a lot of clearance problems in the front. Stick to the smaller 185/60 and fit the 195 or bigger in the rear.
anything-14. I ran 195/55-14 on my car for a year. At the end, I had found the right height and offset so they won't rub, but it was out of question of lowering the car. They were looking wonderful but I finally decided that I want good handling more than good lookin'. With some trouble you may find the good offset wheel and a low enough tire to fit in the 14" size, but I don't think it worth the trouble. In UK there is many X1/9 with 14" tires, but they have lower profile tires than we got in North America.
So you got 2 choices:
1) Listening to my wise advices
2) Do as I did. Learn by yourself. Make some mistakes. Find what is your limit. Maybe your priority are only on the look and you will live with tires that barely fit. It's your choice.

I used to run them on my '77. You need at least a 5.5" rim, better a 6". 5" won't cut it.
My rims stuck out right to the edge of the fender and I had to cut away some of the metal in front of the front wheel. If you have wheel that don't stick out as far you may get away w/o doing this.
