Just bought some semi metallic brake pads and slotted rotors and am now looking to suspension. I can get a set of IAP sport springs for $200 or a set of the Jamex springs for $250. Has anyone tried either of these? Any info at all would be helpful. Especially comparison info. A set of yoko avs intermediates (185/60's) is coming shortly and when I get more money, a sport exhaust and anti-sway bars. Thanks as usual for the input!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

They are quite superb for road use though. I've been running with a set for about 2 years now and I'm inclined to say they were the best mod I've made on the car (out of a long list)
I have a set of "unidentified" short springs and a set of kyb struts ready to go on as an alternative, but I suspect that it may be some time before I get around to it though.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I know someone with a new set which I am considering buying for $250. Also, I'd really like to hear from someone with the IAP springs!! Anyone out there with them on, let me know!! A couple of notes:

1. Roll stiffness is roll stiffness, it doesn't matter whether it comes from bars or springs. Stiff springs will give a firmer ride for a given amount of roll stiffness when compared to swaybars. Swaybars should be used more as a tuning aid for handling balance than as the sole resistance to body roll.

2. Lowering the car will actually INCREASE body roll unless roll stiffness is added. Lowering the chassis will lower the roll center in relationship to the center of gravity. (Roll center is a function of suspension geometery, center of gravity is a static measurement that moves up and down with ride height) This increases the "moment arm" which increases the leverage the chassis has over the springs and bars and results in more body roll.

I would recommend you get a front bar soon, it halps a lot. JC Whitney sells ADDCO bars for cheap. They were backordered when I tried to get one though.

Quite the contrary, it will reduce body roll somewhat, improve turn-in response and generally give the car a more stable feel and crisp response. It takes a lot to make an X have dominant understeer and the Addco bar can't do that much.

Then you will have a choice of height and also can change the spring rates (by buying more springs. Other advantage would be the smaller diameter of these race springs, giving you more room for wider wheels. Also a lot of spring rates and lenght choice.

I wrote something in this forum a while ago about that. There was even some pics.

Basically, this modification is intend for racers BUT is offering no disadvantages for the road. In fact, it is even better than lowered springs since you can level your car to the original level, bring it down for racing, or I even had to raise the front of the car recently to be able to tow it.

A company like Ground Control can help you. Some Fiat specialists are also offering products.

Basically, you will have to cut the lower perch on your struts, then insert a threaded tube from the top. An adjustable collar is screwed onto the tube, a "racing spring" go over it (2 1/2 diameter from memory) and then you will fit a top perch. It could work with the original top mount (but you will loose some travel) or metal to metal with camber plates on the top. I'm there now, but I started with the original mounts.

If you are not wanting to do work on your car and look for a cheap way of lowering, this is not it. But is is not much more expensive than using lowered springs and it is the ultimate solution for adjusting the height of the car. You may even want to "corner weight" the car. But I'm digressing.

Secondly how are the tubes fixed on? Again I can see how you do it with the 1300 struts as the threaded cap can act as a restraining nut, but this wouldn't be possible on the 1500.....

But cutting the perch with a grinder or saw will not put a lot of heat in the strut. Steve Hoelscher then to have the rod completely compress to avoid damages to the seals.

Still, there is a small risk of damages.

Second, the threaded tube is not fix to the strut body. In the front, the tube sit on the "ears" of the strut, in the rear, IF the tube is not long enough, a short tube slightly larger than the diameter of the strut should be weld at the bottom and a ring is fit on the top of it.

The threaded tube is sitting in place just by the pressure of the spring. Some sort of spacers must be use between the threaded tube and the strut to avoid lateral movement. This alone tend to keep the tube in place.

There are a multitude of kits available in the UK, but so far I have avoided them as I was unsure as to how to make it all work. Not suprisingly none of the kits include the X1/9 in their listings and since they aren't "peanuts" (although not expensive) I would rather be sure before I went ahead and bought some to try. I'm keen to do so as I have a pair of spherical bearing mounts for the car that I would like to try (just need to find another pair of them as well).
