Finally got the '82 X1/9 ready for state inspectiona "sticker".....didn't pass (no surprise, but I wanted details.....small rust hole in floor and leaky struts). So I continued on for 150 mile roundtrip to work. Beautiful day on the back roads of Maine & NH. The car worked fine except for:
1) Buffeting that comes on at 52mph, you can hearit and see it in the seat back, gear shift lever, dash everything....like the car is trying to shake itself apart....gets a little better at higher speed. Just installed (and balanced) new Dunlop tires on the front.
2) Beserk voltmeter.....everyonce in a while the alternator belt would screech and the voltmeter would peg itself at 16 volts. This would last for a few minutes and then the needle would drop to normal for a while. When I got home I had to hose out the front trunk because the battery had "boiled" over.
3) Odd electrical behavior at "key on" (BEFORE turning key to run the starter motor). Dash lights on....clic click.....dash lights off...click...dash lights on....click etc. Like premature signaling by the relay that cuts stuff out when the starter motor is cranking???

Thanks in advance for any ideas......enjoy the weekend,
Charlie.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Sounds like the voltage reg (internal) is full fielding the alternator. This produces max output(overcharging), and if the belt is a little loose, it squeels when this happens. Get it fixxed pronto or don't drive it. A boiled over battery is only one thing to be concerned about, as the car is designed to operate with about 14 volts max. Overchaging can do dammage (cook) to bulbs, motors, guages on so on.
Good luck with your inspection

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->First of all... You do know how to access the alternator from the rear trunk, don't you. If not, write for details.

Once replaced... see if it clears up ALL your electrical problems... otherwise, I would expect loose or bad wiring, or a bad ignition switch.

As for the struts... yours should be rebuildable with cartridges. I bought mine from Pep Boys for 29 bucks apiece and a spring compressor for 11 bucks from Harbor Freight. Had to make a special PIN socket tool out of an old socket... but it was a rather fast and rewarding job. I spent about three hours and also lopped an 1 1/2 inches of vertical height outta the springs (1 and 1/4 coil off the top)

The little hole... file out until all the rust is gone... weld in a new section or use duct tape as a backing... and BONDO it in. Remove tape and SCULPTURE the bondo to look like the rest of the bottom and them hit the whole car with Pep Boys 2 dollar a can undercoating... takes about 4 cans... looks great!

Later, and good luck!

Best Regards,
