I put my car up on jackstands and proceeded to replace the starter. I removed two bolts easily... 3rd one would not come out. I pulled so hard, the bolt snapped in half. Great.. Anyways, with a little pushing, i got the starter out. I picked up a new starter, and came back to put it in, when i realize the old bolt is still all the way in the mounting hole!! I hammered and pryed and tried everything for 4 hours and I could not get it out. Well... how DO you remove a bolt that's stuck in there? I can't get my car going until its removed.

Thanks!
Matt

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Matt,

Have you tried an EZ-out? These things are great. If that doesn't work, try taking a shortened hacksaw blade and cutting a groove in it. Then try and put a hefty screw driver to it. Also, treat with some penetrating oil.

Best of Luck!

Let us know.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Matt, The key is patience, lots of penetrating oil, and luck. Your first goal is to not make things worse than they already are. Soak with penetrating oil prepeatedly over the course of a day or so, maybe try to turn/wiggle it a little with some channel locks or vice grips each time, if it is sticking out any, but dont bugger it all up. Steel bolt into aluminum? can be a real bear if you throw in some corrosion to lock it in place.
If you have to go to an easy out, be very careful to try and drill the bolt as close to center as possible. This way if you have to completely drill the bolt out it will not eat into threads on one side. Flatten the broken end first so you can center punch if possible. Also be aware that easy outs are very hard steel, and therefore brittle. DO NOT break the easy out off in the bolt. If you get a broken one stuck you are ****ED(add own expletive). Get a high quality bit to drill the bolt, you dont want a cheap one walking off sideways into the hole threads.
If you end up having to drill it out, you may be able to drill all but the threads and clean out with a tap, if you keep the hole centered. Last resort is to drill out and retap for a recoil, they work very well. Good luck.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

If the broken bolt doesn't foul the new starter, two bolts will hold it in place.

Making sure nothing flammable or plastic was in the vicinity, would gently heat the aluminum bell housing in the vicinity of the bolt hole. Hopefully the faster expansion rate of the aluminum will cause it to loosen it's grip on the bolt. [FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I was wondering about that ! I was thinking that perhaps the four speeds were set up different (then the 5 speeds).

I remember retapping the potmetal on the starter itself and the bell housing was thoughbolt ONLY.

....so .....If I found a broken stud in the bell housing I'd get a drift and drive it on through. The housing is string there and you are using a rod of steel with a few barbs (threads) on it to float through aluminum. Even if you have to move metal. It will work. Guaranteed.

The preheating of the aluminum with a torch is a good idea....but I'm betting a cold drive will work just fine. Don't be afraid to move some metal.

The starter has dowel/index pins for alignment to ring gear so go for it.

Great fun.

out for now,
