New air cleaner

Ron Avery

True Classic
Update engine bay photos, I installed my new air cleaner from Henk. I think the engine side of my X1/9 is done, for now.

Maybe, next time the belt is done. I am running 9:25-1 compression, a midwest hot Euro cam, Bosch electronic ignition, and advanced timing, plus a 2” header and exhaust, with no,

smog equipment at all. It does wind up to redline with a lot more urgency. And drives like a much better package. Along with the less weight of the excised smog equipment. I am also running no bumpers.

Holy Cow!! Your X looks spectacular! Not sure what looks better. The engine bay or the exterior. Wow...

What suspension are you using, you seem to have nailed the stance.
The P.O. Installed the suspension setup. It has KYB shocks, with red coil springs. The tires are Perelli 175/70 13.
Thanks for the compliment, I agree.

Which type of Pirelli.
The Michelin kind…

It’s on the side of the tire 😂

On a more serious note it looks like the front caster is off with the wheels so far forward in the wheel openings.

I think that lower front edge of the wheel well may actually be closer than the rear. When I was running 185/70-13s on mine, I had to "adjust" that lower front edge of the wheel well for clearance (and flatten the lip all around). I'm pretty sure that the caster was OK at the time.

now on a larger device I can see they are Defenders. No longer available, unfortunately. A great tire.

They are Michelin Defender 175/70TR13 which I got 3 years ago from Discount Tire Direct in Arizona. They still might be available at Pep Boys...

I replaced the Defender tires with Pirelli Cinturato’s 175;70/13”. From Lucas tire
The Defender’s, were nice for normal driving. But I have been doing a bit of Autocross events lately.

I have had a 4 wheel alignment done. I had to remove the front wheel spacers. So the front wheels would clear.

Please give your impressions of the Pirellis when you have some miles on them. I have an ancient set of Bridgestones in 175/70r13
on my X I need to replace.

Cheers, Dave

Dave I have the same tires on my 1972 Triumph GT6, that is hot roded with performance Triumphtune parts.
I have done a few Autocross with them on the car. And a bit of road driving. The tires feel very good and responsive.
I will have my X1/9 at a Autocross event next weekend, same event as before with the Defender tires.
So I can give you a direct compression then.

If I can't find anything decent in 185/60-13 when my tires are shot, I may go back to 185/70-13 CN36. The original versions worked great on the X and I understand the new versions use modern materials and processes so they should be at least as good.

I drove a TR-6 back when they were new. A fraternity brother of mine had one that he let me check out.
