I have been looking at a '76 X1/9 that someone wanted to trade me for an older motorcycle. The car is in primer and the body is rock-solid (amazing for Chicago!). The engine starts and runs well and the interior is complete (Need some cleaning and freshening!). It has some aftermarket rims (Pretty plain) and the top is in good condition. My question is what is a good deal? I know it is difficult to value a car you have never seen, but is the car in the $1500 range or the $500 range? How easy is the car to repair (Are parts availible?).

Any help would be great! I really like the look of the car and get conflicting info from people (some say it will catch on fire, other say it will be in the shop 6 out of 7 days a week!).

Thanks!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Daryl,

You won't find anybody here to tell you bad things about X1/9's. With the internet parts are easy to find and prices are fair. The car isn't a nightmare to repair. Electrical aren't top notch but once fixed everything should work great for years. Rust is generally the problem

Since it is a 1976, it's coming with a 1300cc 4 speed. Most people prefer the bigger 1500cc and 5 speed and the look (bumpers) of the 1979 and up cars. Hence the value of the 1976 is lower. Also, it is a trade you weren't looking for AND it is in primer.

Unless the mechanical are top, the interior is pristine and the milleage really low, I wouldn't offer much more than $500.

You will find the handling fantastic (unless worn shocks) but there is a lack of power. You won't noticed it when driving in small country roads since the feeling is so good, but at stop lights, don't expect to beat anything, not even a city bus.

BTW, is it running? Are all the parts there? Look under the car for the driver's floor. Plan to change the timing belt since the 1300cc engine isn't interference free. And stick with us to learn more!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->They are getting hard to find out our way. So you really don't have much choice. The 76 you are looking at sounds fine. Expect problem like any car. PO abuse usually is the main problem. Clean it up, change the fluids, belts and you should be fine. Call up my buds at Autosprint Fiat Service in Chicago for any work needed. They also may have a lead on an X if you want to look some more. 773-685-0930. Since it's in primer, you can paint it any color you want. Not a problem . You more likely would do it anyway. They catch fire if you neglect to change the fuel lines. Change them right away. All of them. The price range sounds right. All interiors crumble. Mostly early models. You can get slip covers from parts sources that look pretty close to original. Let's face it. If you want a perfect example, expect to pay lots more. I have seen non runners sell for $500. Welcome to the club.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->For ENTHUSIASTS who LIKE to work on cars...

I drove my '79 over 110K to work and back... and have 148K on the same engine. Runs better today than it did new!~

Frankly I find the maintenance on a Chevy MORE expensive and time consuming than on a FIAT. If ya want a maintenance free car... buy a Honda. If ya wanna have the most fun a car can offer for ANY amount of money, but the X!

One thing DOES concern me though... PRIMER. Primer HIDES alot... Rust free huh? Use a magnet along the lower body panels... take the jack and jack up at least one side and look closely underneath.

If it runs... and the body is acceptable... offer 375 and pay no more than 575... or take some fotos and let us analyze it some more for ya.

Keep in touch...

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Price guide to X1/9s on my site next week. I'm sick of seeing solid runners go for cheap. We are killing ourselves if we let this happen. These are classic and RARE Italian sports cars that are dissapearing fast. If we want parts and stuff to be still available we better up market these cars quick.

My suggestion is, after buying and dealing with these cars as a full time hobby would be no more than $1200. If you can get it for $350-575 go for it. Sellers loss.
We better get these prices up while we can or the rest will die off like the Miata in the Blink 182 video.

Geeeze, People pay more for burned out 85 Toyota Tercels with 210k miles on it.

Point being, don't sell these cars short. If you do, just crush em now and get it done with. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Daryl-

You certainly came to the right place! I will concur with all of the comments already made (except the one about the post-79 bumpers... I'm of the opinion that they are clunky).

Whether the rest of the car world looks at them in the same light as us is debateable, but the fact remains that this is an exotic car of sorts. With proper maintenance they can be quite reliable - however, I am of the opinion that they should never be relied on as a daily driver.

Why? Well, they are more fragile than some newer cars, they tend to have rust problems (winter driving is the most common culprit) and lets face it... the newest of these cars is 15 years old, the oldest of them are 30. Since you mentioned a motorcycle as well, i am assuming that you are looking for a fair weather driver... good call.

First purchase after the car comes hom is the factory manual... they aren't cheap ($60 or so) but worth every penny.

Cheers,

Doc<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
