I have a couple of questions that I hope you guys will be able to answer.

1. when starting the car and starting to drive the charging gauge stays up in the red for about 2 minutes when the enginge is revved at all. after the two minutes or so it drops down into normal range and doesn't move from there.

2. When starting the car from cold, car not in gear, there is a scrapey, hissing (like rough sandpaper on concrete) noise from the transmition. As soon as I push the clutch in the noise stops. If I let the clutch out just slightly the noise speeds up as the clutch plate grabs. Havn't noticed it hot but by then I'm to excited by driving it, so who knows! Trany is full of fluid.



3. On the aluminum Phlenum chamber above the engine where the intake draws down into the cylinders there are a couple of vacume tube connections. on the right hand side (looking forward) one of them has no hose on it. anybody know what this one is for?


4. The X1/9 has AC but does not seem to work, I have not tried to take the dash apart at this point but where would be a good place to start?
Note fans blow and the switch for fan speed seems to work. also the heat lever works. If i remember my first x1/9 (an '81 i owned in '86) the switchs made a VERY SOFT(gasping,sucking,breathing sound), Vacume powered i belive. These push buttons don't seem to make a sound other than turning on fans etc.

WHERE CAN I GET KEYS MADE???

For four years I have told her stories about my old X1/9 and when I saw this one about 4 days ago, well she MADE ME buy it.

That is the clutch. Mine has done it from the day I bought the car. It's never gotten any worse, so I haven't worried about it. Maybe one of our tranny & clutch experts will step up with more information.

You can buy key blanks from most of the vendors, and have them cut anywhere. I found that an Alfa key blank works fine for my car (don't know if that's a universal truth tho). I have the factory key on my key ring, and the Alfa key as a spare.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->the noise from the transmission is prob the clutch release bearing , when they wear or dry out they will make this noise , not always a major concern , my X does it and past ones have done also - take the trans out and replace the bearing if you really want to, i wouldnt bother.

air con - may just need the system charging - filling with the correct cooling gas, not that expensive , this will also tell you if there is a leak somewhere. good luck !!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi there... If it makes noise in neutral with the car at idle, and the noise stops when you step on the clutch, then the noise is most likely from the trans, not the clutch or throw out bearing.
There is VERY little or no load on the throw out bearing until you step on the clutch pedal.. if the throw out bearing was bad, this is when it would be most likely to make noise.
The input shaft bearings are spinning in neutral, and the gears are spinning on the output shaft. I would change the fluid to Redline synthetic and hope for the best.

Sounds like (at the least) the input shaft bearing...and can't get to it without splitting the cases.

Then there's the relationship of the output shaft to the sliding sleeves.
