I've got most of the bugs sorted out. It's got an 1100 Yugo head on it that has really added to it's enjoyment. If only I had a bit more money to throw at it. I guess all good things come to those who wait. Anyways, it has this odd hesitation thing going that has just started recently. I'll be driving along and the engine will suddenly loose power. It won't stall, but it does loose power. If I lift on the gas pedal, it'll "catch" again, and off I go as if nothing happened. It's been getting steadily worse. The "spider guys" have all said that this was a sign that the fuel pump is starting to fail. I've also heard that this was a sign of a poor connection in the ignition system. I've wiggled wires and fussed with connections with little or no effect. I'll be changing the fuel filter tonight and I'll see if that has any effect, but, I would like some opinions on what this could be and whether I should be laying down some $ for a new pump.

Ya need a certain amount of pressure and volume in order for the car NOT to stumble or have enough fuel for the amount the throttle position is OPENED. (When you back off, there is sufficient fuel and it runs well.)

I have also experienced a clogged filter CAUSING my pump to eventually fail. Get the specs for the proper amount of pressure and have it verified with a PRESSURE guage.

I'm unfamiliar with the specifics of FI on these cars... but hopefully changing JUST the filter MIGHT give you the pressure you need if its LOW. If it proves to be the pump, then change the filter ALSO... (cheap insurance.)

I'm surprised because the air filter is not very old. I think I will go to an after-market air filter set up. Some cooler air would be better then the hot engine compartment air it is getting now. And perhaps the filter will last longer than the few months this one did. Anyway, it's running like a champ now. Thanks for the help guys.

Hmmmmm!

Coupla ideas if ya dont mind modifications...

1. I removed the inner baffle to my engine cover by drilling out the rivets... Hot air escapes freely now... electronics are still protected from rain.

2. I ducted my intake directly to the LEFT side scoop for COOL, CLEAN, outside FRESH air. Picks up less dust and stuff than from under the car. Also has a nice ram-air effect around 70 mph.

I didn't even consider it when it started acting up because it was so "new". the filter was very very dusty, not oily at all. It IS fuel injected and I am certainly not against making mods ... after all, I have a head from an 1100 Yugo on there and getting the thermotime switch in was interesting. But that is another story.

I've pondered a screen type of engine cover that I would have to make myself. Haven't yet due to $ and skill issues. Drilling out rivets is a piece of cake tho. I thought the engine cover latch was attached to the inner baffle ...

I've often wondered why the air filter arrangment was set up the way it is ...with the intake pointed at perhaps the dirtiest, nearly hottest area on the car. How did you re-route the existing housing? I've looked at that often and been one step away from changing it but I've never taken that step (yet).

Remove the hatch, turn it upside down and drill out the rivets... end of story.

I used Duplicolor Trim Paint on mine and it looks like new. If ya have a RED or YELLER car, painting them Body color sometimes really sets them off!

Place it over the bay as is without any screening first and see if ya like it. I do... but if you do wanna screen it... use the baffle you just removed for a form and pattern... and rivet or screw one sheet of screening back into place!

As for the intake... I remind you I have a carb model... I cut back the air cleaner snorkel for about a 2 " oval diameter and used 2 1/4 inch plastic expandable ducting from Kragen.

I removed the left rear vent and its internal duct and used a tin can of like diameter and riveted to the outer duct. Sealed it with duct tape and painted it flat black.

Reinstalled, and tied 2 1/4 duct to it with a clamp.

Works GREAT!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hey, there is a really great repair place out there. Autosprint Ltd. at 5257 West Addison St. (773)685-0930. I think they are tho only Fiat specialist in the whole city area and they always have a few X1/9's being fixed or restored there. THey also do all the othere "I" car exotics too.
I'm in IN (South Bend)) but seem to get to Chicago every few weeks. Maybe we get together in a bit?
